Last week, the Will Allen Foundation sponsored Clairton City School District's Back-to-School Information Day, bringing together service providers and community organizations to welcome students and get them ready for the year ahead! 🎒

WAF provided food for attendees, teachers, and staff, along with backpacks, hygiene kits, school supplies, and socks for students in need. We also shared info on upcoming programming including our robotics team and afterschool program, so families know what's next for their kids.

As summer winds down, we couldn't be more excited for the new school year. Here's to a strong start for every student! 🧡

Week four of “Best Summer Yet” camp was packed with new friends and outdoor fun!

🐴 The kids loved meeting Equine Officer Jimbo along with Officer Bobbie and Sergeant Jason!
🔥 Our friends from Venture Outdoors helped us roast s'mores and get creative making tie dye shirts.
🛝 Campers also had fun on the playground and in the gym.
🎣 We headed out to Peter's Creek in Jefferson for some creek stomping and fishing!
🧘 To top it off, Brynn's mom joined us to teach yoga.

Today we had a visit from our friends at the Allegheny County mounted officers department. Equine Officer Jimbo was such a good boy. The kids from Clairton City School District loved him and Officer Bobbie and Sergeant Jason, too!

They learned about interacting with a working horse and got to ask questions about police work and being a mounted officer. Everyone got to pet Officer Jimbo, who is a 12 year-old Percheron.

Week three of our Best Summer Yet Camp with the Clairton students was full of energy!

🏃 Coach Dave Gray joined us to teach the campers exciting new games.
🌌 Moonshot Museum came back with their mobile planetarium and Sphero robots, and students learned how to code them!
🥚 Venture Outdoors challenged our campers to an egg drop competition, putting their engineering skills to the test.
🛶 And we capped off the week with a kayaking field trip with Venture Outdoors. What a way to close things out!

The start of a school year should feel full of possibility. But for too many students, it begins with one more barrier. Imagine being a student walking in on the first day with no backpack, wet socks, no pencil to write with. You’re already behind on day one.

We serve families that are in transient housing situations, students who experience homelessness and those who simply do not have the funds to provide much needed items as the school year begins. Recently we have provided clothing to some students who were not able to launder their few clothing items.

That is why we are launching Backpack Campaign 2026 today. Our goal is to raise the support needed by August 15 to provide backpacks, school supplies, and a back-to-school celebration for students at Clairton City School District with some backpacks going to other schools with students in need in the City of Pittsburgh.
