BirdSafe Pgh/Lights Out Program

BirdSafe Pgh/Lights Out Program We are a research project of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, aimed to make Pittsburgh a safer city for birds.

We research birds colliding with windows, and promote turning out lights during spring and fall avian migration periods.

In the wake of last week's super collision event in Chicago a petition from the Field Musuem and local Audubon chapters aims to have the building responsible turn out their lights after 11 pm during migration.

Consider signing the petition below.

We demand that the Governor of Illinois, the Mayor of Chicago and those managing the McCormick Place Lakeside facility take immediate and urgent action to require that interior lights at McCormick Place East be extinguished or shades drawn every night of migration. This means requiring exhibitors to...

Last week almost 1,000 migrating birds collided with a building on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago. Hundreds more were collected throughout the city and potentially thousands more were impacted but never found. This is a singularly event caused by a combination of several factors including weather building up to the night of October 4th and the weather that percipitated over the city in the morning of the 5th. While these numbers are very high they still don't compare to the impact that urban sprawl has on migrating birds. While it is important to change our inner city landscapes for birds, we also must confront the issues in all of our backyards.

Weather conditions, a pulse of migrating warblers, and bright lights combined to create a wave of bird death across the city Thursday morning.

While fall migration brings more birds into our area sticky traps cause more harm than good. Spotted lanternflies don’t bite, and rarely kill their host plant (tree of heaven, an invasive plant itself). So please do the birds a favor and don’t use sticky traps! Penn State Extension has directions for other traps that ONLY catch lanternflies.

We are feeling the same way in Pittsburgh! Please consider doing your part to help keep migrants safe as they pass through our area this coming Spring.

It feels and sounds like spring today in Philadelphia! While spring is on our mind, let’s all do our part and get those windows addressed with bird collision deterrents BEFORE spring migration is in full swing. There are many options available. Whatever you choose, remember spacing is critical. Follow the 2 x 2 inch rule and put the application on the outside of your windows. Thank you 💙❤️💛 Bird Safe Philly!

It looks like we are in for another big night of migration! Make sure to turn out those lights from midnight to 6 am (or longer). !Here they come again!! The BirdCast prediction for migration over the next few nights is topping 300 million birds per night—even more than the push we saw last weekend. Birding should be great the next few days, especially in the central and southeastern U.S. It's also a good time to turn off nonessential indoor and outdoor lights to help birds stay safe and on course.
