The Hill District is strongest when our neighbors have a seat at the table. Here is a real chance to build one.

The City of Pittsburgh Office of the Mayor is offering the Civic Leadership Academy, a free 10-week course that takes residents inside City government and helps them become more informed, engaged civic leaders. This is exactly the kind of opportunity we want the Hill to show up for.

What it is: A free 10-week program with an inside look at how the City works, featuring presentations from different City department leaders.

When: Wednesdays, 6 to 8 PM, September 16 to December 2, 2026.

Who can apply: City of Pittsburgh residents, or anyone who runs a business or nonprofit or does community impact work within city limits.

Deadline: Friday, August 21 by 11:59 PM.

Apply by scanning the QR code on the flyer. Then bring what you learn home to the Hill.

Inform. Engage. Connect. Bring your voice.

Hill History.

Hill History.

The Hill District in the 1920s and 1930s was not only a neighborhood of workers and churches and jazz clubs. It was a place where Black Pittsburgh built its own economic institutions with deliberate intention.
Black-owned insurance companies, funeral homes, law offices, and medical practices operated above the Centre Avenue storefronts, serving a community that white Pittsburgh's professional class largely refused to serve on equal terms.
These businesses were not informal operations. They were fully professional enterprises, staffed by educated Black Pittsburghers who had credentials equal to any white counterpart and opportunities far more constrained.
The Pittsburgh Courier documented this business community extensively and deliberately, understanding that economic visibility was itself a form of civil rights advocacy.
Black Pittsburgh built its own professional class. Pittsburgh should know their names.

Today, the Hill District Collaborative was honored to receive a Golden Shovel Award from Mayor Corey O'Connor and the City of Pittsburgh recognized alongside the dedicated officers of Zone 5 and our neighbor John Porter.

The award celebrates those who went above and beyond this winter to shovel snow for elderly and disabled Pittsburghers, making sure our neighbors could get to their doors, their cars, and their appointments safely.

We're grateful for this recognition, but the real honor is the work itself. Looking out for one another is who we are in the Hill District. When a neighbor needs a clear path, we show up. That's the heart of this community, and it's the heart of everything we do.

Thank you to the City of Pittsburgh for seeing this work, and thank you to every volunteer and neighbor who picked up a shovel this winter. We're proud to keep showing up for the people who make the Hill District home.

🗣️City Controller Rachael Heisler’s office released the 2025 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report earlier this week. This report tells the story of the city’s financial activities for 2025. The general fund spent $44 million more than it brought in. Revenues and expenses were stable. The big take away is the federal COVID relief dollars masked the core financial issue facing the city: spending is outpacing revenue. You can read the full report here: https://www.pittsburghpa.gov/files/assets/city/v/1/controller/documents/annual-comprehensive-financial-report/city-of-pittsburgh-acfr-final-2025-3.pdf. An early press story is available on TribLive here: https://triblive.com/local/pittsburgh-finances-in-delicate-position-controller-cautions-in-annual-financial-report/

Pittsburgh Controller Rachael Heisler on Friday said the city’s finances are in a “delicate position,” echoing warnings that the city must rein in spending and grow its revenues. The controller’s 2025 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report showed the city spent nearly $45 mill...
