Community and Life Sciences opportunities in Greater Hazelwood!

10/20/2026

🎉 The Greater Hazelwood Neighborhood Commitment (GHNC) was excited to host Pitt Graduate and former Hazelwood resident, Carol O’Donnell, the Director of the Smithsonian Science Education Center. Dr. O’Donnell developed the Smithsonian Biotechnology Curriculum for grades K-12 that is now used in GNEP’s Biotechnology Program in partnership with Center of Life and held at the Spartan Community Center which was, at one time, St. Stephen’s Grade School where Dr. O’Donnell attended as a child.

During her visit, Dr. O’Donnell was accompanied by the GHNC staff and volunteers on a tour and also had the opportunity to meet with some of the middle school students and Pitt GNEP tutors. It was a wonderful visit that certainly displayed what is possible at Pitt! 💛💙

We toured the BioForge as a part of our Life Sciences Bridge Program! The ElevateBio and Pitt BioForge teams provided an extraordinary glimpse into the future of this emerging sector for our Cohort #2 participants. We learned all about the career opportunities that facilities like this can provide. Now is a great time for young people to get their foot in the door of this industry! Special thanks to for such a thoughtful tour of the space!
