As Mental Health Awareness & Trauma-Informed Care Month ends, we’re closing with this fact: trauma and homelessness DO impact the brain. 🧠

Trauma-informed care matters year-round because families deserve safety, dignity, and healing at every stage of their journey. 💜

What does it truly mean to practice Trauma-Informed Care? 🧠

Too often, traditional emergency response systems look strictly at a family's immediate financial or housing crisis, missing the deep psychological layers underneath. Homelessness is a profound neurobiological strain on the nervous system—and a roof alone cannot heal a survival response. ❤️‍🩹

💡Some quick facts for you:
* 93% of homeless mothers in the US had a history of trauma
* 81% experienced multiple traumatic events
* 36% had a lifetime history of post-traumatic stress disorder

When parents have faced trauma, they are more likely to pass adverse experiences onto children. Homelessness is a difficult cycle to break when you have not been given the space to heal which every person deserves.

Swipe through to see how this framework shifts our perspective from individual blame to systemic empathy, ensuring families receive the emotional stabilization they need to thrive. ➡️

This Memorial Day, we honor those who have served our country. 🇺🇸

We also recognize that more than 30,000 veterans experience homelessness on any given night, and many are facing mental health challenges that make stability even harder to reach.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminded that healing takes more than a roof overhead. It takes safety, support, and care that sees the whole person.

Guided by trauma-informed care, we believe every family deserves to feel safe, supported, and hopeful.

At SMFS, we’re committed to helping families stay together and move toward a safer future. ⭐️

Homelessness looks different for everyone, but for many of the families we serve, the root of the struggle is an invisible history of trauma. At SMFS, we prioritize safety, dignity, compassion, and respect because we know that healing is the only way to build a foundation to stay housed for good. 🏠

Share this post to help us shift the conversation from “housing first” to “healing first.” ❤️‍🩹🧠
