Pflugerville is launching a new effort to help restore native habitat in portions of our undeveloped park land through a community-focused rewilding initiative.

In partnership with the City of Pflugerville, the Pflugerville Parks Foundation, and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, this program aims to increase native plants, support pollinators and wildlife, improve ecological health, and create more resilient green spaces for future generations.

This doesn’t mean parks will be abandoned or neglected. Rewilding is an intentional process focused on restoring native ecosystems while balancing recreation, education, and community needs.

We’re excited to share this journey with you over the coming months.

🐝🦋 Pollinator Highlight: It’s Not Just the Bees! 🦇🌸

When we think of pollinators, bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds probably come to mind first, but they’re only part of the story!

Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes. Moths, beetles, bats, wasps, and other insects and wildlife can also play a role in moving pollen from flower to flower and helping plants reproduce.

🌼 Why do pollinators matter?

Pollinators do more than make our landscapes beautiful. They help plants reproduce, including many of the plants that support our food systems, local wildlife, and healthy ecosystems.

Unfortunately, many pollinator populations are facing challenges from habitat loss and other environmental pressures. One of the simplest ways we can help is by creating more habitat with native plants that provide food, shelter, and places to reproduce.

That’s what Rewild Pflugerville is all about: making room for nature in our own community, one yard, garden, park, and native plant at a time. 🌿

So next time you see a moth fluttering around at night, a beetle crawling across a flower, or even a wasp visiting a bloom, remember, they may be doing important work!

🌱 What exactly does “rewilding” mean?

You may have heard us talking about Rewild Pflugerville, but rewilding doesn’t mean simply letting an area grow wild and walking away.

It’s about thoughtfully restoring native habitat and helping natural ecosystems thrive again. That can mean bringing back native plants, creating better habitat for pollinators and wildlife, improving soil and water health, and allowing natural processes to do more of the work. 🦋🌾🐦

Rewild Pflugerville is bringing this approach to areas right here in our community, and the Pflugerville Parks Foundation is excited to support the effort through community engagement, education, volunteer opportunities, and more.

Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more about rewilding, the plants and wildlife that call these habitats home, and ways you can get involved.
