Buckeye Reef Monitoring 2026 🌊🐟

We’re off to a strong start for the 2026 monitoring season! The team completed three survey dives at Reef 2-2020 (Concrete Cubes), Reef 2-2024 (tetrahedrons and ecosystem structures), and Reef 18 (scrap metal), on Saturday April 25. Fish communities looked similar to previous years—but the standout this time was size. We recorded some of the largest gamefish we’ve seen yet, including big gag and red groupers, along with impressive amberjack and mangrove snapper.

Healthy reefs mean healthy fisheries—and it’s exciting to see these habitats continue to thrive and support marine life over time. Stay tuned as we keep tracking changes throughout the season! At least 5 boats were fishing Buckeye Reef during the surveys. Next Survey dive on May 6, so stay tunned for more pictures and videos.

🌊 Celebrating Earth Day with the Taylor County Reef Research Team! 🐟

Did you know that over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water? Our oceans and coastal ecosystems play a critical role in supporting life, and here in Taylor County, we are fortunate to be surrounded by some of these valuable natural resources.

This Earth Day, we recognize the incredible efforts of the Taylor County Reef Research Team and their ongoing commitment to marine conservation and community engagement.

From artificial reef monitoring and habitat assessments to diver training and citizen science programs, this dedicated group of volunteers plays a vital role in understanding and protecting our marine ecosystems. Their work supports sustainable fisheries, enhances marine habitats, and generates valuable data that informs conservation and management decisions.

🤿 Through hands-on participation, the team not only contributes to science but also inspires others to become stewards of our coastal environments. Their passion and dedication help ensure that Taylor County’s waters remain healthy and productive for future generations.

💙 You’re o-fish-ally my favorite.

Fisheries management relies on accurate data, and those data start with people on the water.

Sea Grant Puerto Rico researchers are working with commercial fishers across the island to document the common names, fishing gears and techniques used in today’s fisheries. This project highlights how local knowledge and scientific research complement one another.

By learning directly from fishers, this work helps improve fisheries data collection while recognizing the importance of community knowledge in fisheries management.
