We loved seeing our community turn out for the Pemberville Free Fair's Grand Parade!

This year's float was inspired by our "Unearth a Story" Summer Reading Program and tribute to our dino-mite patrons. After all, you are the public in public libraries!

We are also thankful to both the Friends of the Library and North Branch Nursery whose donations helped to make this prehistoric jungle on wheels.

Special shout out to all our library personnel who helped design, paint, build, as well as wave and toss candy from this detailed float (bubbles were shooting out of the volcano!)

Remember.....LIBRARIES ARE FOR YOU!

It's always a good day when we have a new Dewey Dare Champion! This evening Henry brought in his title tracker for the final count, and yes, he read 100 non-fiction books including all ten categories of the Dewey Decimal system. Henry is homeschooled and will be sixth grader this year.

Henry most enjoyed reading books about sports (700s,) and history books-especially books about famous battles (900s.) He loves to read, so he enjoyed challenging himself, but he was especially motivated by the $25 gift certificate donated to Dewey Dare Champions by Amplex Internet because he loves having his very own books. Honestly, that is a great reason to do the Dewey Dare!

A BIG thank you to Amplex for their generous sponsorship of the Dewey Dare. We love that you are willing to motivate and reward our readers in this program.

I asked Henry if he learned anything from the Dewey Dare and he mentioned that he learned a lot, but he also learned about how to find books in different subjects using the Dewey Decimal system. I think that's my favorite answer ever to that question.

It takes time and determination to become a Dewey Dare Champion. Congratulations Henry Brown- you are the newest name on our Wall of Champions!

The 16th Annual Sidewalk Chalk Contest is this Wednesday, August 19 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The contest is presented by the Pemberville Public Library and sponsored by the Pemberville Free Fair Board.

This is how the contest works:

Sidewalk blocks will be numbered started from the corner of Front St. and Memorial Dr. and progressing towards the business district.

Registration forms will be available at the Pemberville Library on the day of the contest or online now at the pembervillefair.org.
You must register your block number and age/group category at the library on the day of the contest and sign the liability form too.

We ask that you provide your own chalk, but the library will have a limited supply of sidewalk chalk that participants can borrow.

All blocks must be completed by 3:00 pm, and judging starts promptly at 3:30 pm. All judge's decisions are final.
Blocks will be judged in the following categories:

Up to and including first grade
Second-fourth grade
Fifth-Seventh grade
Eighth-Twelfth grade
Adult
Group (consists of 2 or more people)

Medals will be awarded for first, second, and third place winners in each age group or category. Winners will be posted on the doors of the library, and medals will be awarded on the Main stage after the Kiddie Parade. Medals not picked up that time will be available in the Fair Board raffle tent.

Keep thinking those sunny (not rainy!) thoughts.

It's not every day that we get a chance to brag about one of our own.

Jennifer Herrera is a graduate of Eastwood schools and I'm pleased to say she was a regular library user and an active Volunteen at the Pemberville Library.

Tomorrow, August 18, 2026, her second book, "Siren Says" is being released. It is published by G.B. Putnam's Sons. "Siren Says," and her previous book "The Hunter" are available wherever you purchase books. (Of course they can also be found at a library near you!)

Jenny, we are thrilled for you! And so very proud.

A lovely surprise for my first day back from vacation! Lucy, who has been reading diligently for months brought in her Dewey Dare title tracker and she reached 100 total books.

It is my privilege to announce that Lucy Derr has completed the Dewey Dare and is our newest Dewey Dare Champion! To achieve the Wall of Champions Lucy had to read 100 total books with at least two books in each of the ten Dewey Decimal categories.

I asked Lucy why she did the Dewey Dare. She shared that she realized she was becoming a better reader and thought she would be able to challenge herself with this goal. She told me that she recognized that the more books she read, the more challenging books she could read.

Lucy's favorite Dewey Category was the 700s (Arts+Recreation) and especially the Garfield books by Jim Davis.

For completing the Dewey Dare, Lucy received an official certificate, a Champion yard sign, and a $25.00 Barnes and Noble gift certificate courtesy of AMPLEX Internet. Thank you AMPLEX for supporting literacy in our community!

Lucy, we are so proud of you and so pleased to add your name to our Wall of Champions- Congratulations!!!
