Results for lower Michigan from a national study to determine which rivers if conserved (blue) and restored (green) could help sustain the nation’s aquatic biodiversity. These rivers are more resilient, connected, biodiverse, naturally flowing, and with good habitat and hydrology. The Paw Paw and Black River watersheds (outlined in black) are the only watersheds with any significant area ranked conserve (blue) in southern Michigan. How have they managed to meet this need to conserve ranking while so many of the southern Michigan’s rivers have not?

Since 2015 we have been fortunate to partner with VBCD and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi to sample streams in the watersheds. Most of the stream sites score fair (yellow), 3-good (green), 2-poor, and 1-excellent. The volunteer stream monitoring is a great way to gage the health of our riverscapes and always a fun excuse to wade in our wonderful waterways. Join us this Oct 4th for this year's fall sampling event: https://www.tworiverscoalition.org/events/van-buren-conservation-district-stream-monitoring-2026-10-04-13-00

Paddlers beware... River levels below the dam have been fluctuating a lot this summer. Getting stuck on the river when the water level drops makes for a very challenging day on the river. I hope they get this resolved.

We collect macroinvertebrates (bugs and the like) from water. The Pokagon Band analyzes what we collect. These macroinvertebrates tell us the short and long term health of our water and help us respond when it’s not healthy. There are different ways to participate whether you want to be on land, in the water, or somewhere in-between. 🌊🪲

No skills or experience needed! We have the supplies, the snacks and drinks, and we’ll show you how easy it is to participate!
