Today during our sermon we continued in our series on Ruth. I have to share with you all the amazing joy I felt when we discussed Matthew 1:5, the only other place in the Bible besides the book of Ruth where she is mentioned. I was so hopeful Pastor Troy would touch on this...and he did!
What was it? Rahab...Rahab is Boaz's Mother! Rahab, the harlot from Jericho that sheltered the Israelite spys and was thus saved from the destruction when Jericho fell. Rahab who put her trust in a God she didn't know. Who held faith for her whole family and then moved with a people she didn't know. All because she had faith in God. She was a stranger in a new land, a previous (I like to think she gave it up) harlot and Boaz's Mother which puts her in the lineage of Christ.
When I heard that all again today, I had a new revelation. My son's, your children, they can be a Boaz too. Boaz was caring, empathetic and he saved Ruth and Naomi. He stepped in when others wouldn't. He was a man of God. I can't help but to think that his Mothers own rough past helped him to become the man he was. He saw his Mothers own struggles. But, most importantly, he saw her faith. He saw her step out in her faith.
All of that to say, never think that your past is a hindrance to who your children can become. They love you. They see your endurance, your consistency in faith. They see when you pray, they see your reactions during happy times and difficult times. Hold onto God. Let him guide you, and your children will learn from your example.
