When we think about our soldiers, few of us consider what their sacrifices really mean. Missed births and birthdays.

Missed anniversaries and holidays. Missed soccer games and school plays. Everyday moments with husbands, wives and their children are missed. We have been doing professional parachute demonstrations for 54 years.

WARRIOR WEDNESDAY

Master Sergeant Fred W. β€œZab” Zabitosky
Medal of Honor Recipient

On 19 February 1968, while serving with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Vietnam, then-Staff Sergeant Fred W. Zabitosky led a nine-man Special Forces long-range reconnaissance patrol deep inside enemy-controlled territory in Laos.

When the patrol was attacked by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force, Zabitosky immediately took control of the defense. He positioned his men, directed their fires, and repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire while moving among his team to maintain control of the fight.

As the patrol fought its way to an extraction point, Zabitosky remained in the open to cover the withdrawal. During the rescue attempt, the helicopter carrying him was hit and crashed.

Seriously wounded, Zabitosky refused to leave his men behind.

He returned to the burning wreckage, pulled the wounded pilot from the aircraft, and dragged him through enemy fire toward a rescue helicopter before collapsing from his own injuries.

For his extraordinary heroism, leadership, and devotion to his team, Staff Sergeant Fred W. β€œZab” Zabitosky was awarded the Medal of Honor.

His actions represent the very best traditions of the Green Beret legacy:

Courage under fire.
Commitment to the team.
Never leaving a man behind.
