A CALL TO PRAYER FOR OUR NATION
Today, my heart is heavy, and I believe the Church must pray.
Not a Democratic prayer.
Not a Republican prayer.
Not a prayer rooted in race, class, denomination, or political preference.
We need a prayer that reaches Heaven.
Our nation needs prayer.
There is so much division among us. Too often, the people we elect to serve the public appear more divided over power and policy than united around the responsibility of serving people. Families are struggling to make ends meet. People are afraid of what tomorrow may bring. Many feel unheard, unseen, and uncertain about whether the systems established to serve them still work for them.
So we must pray for our governmental leaders—from the highest offices in this nation to our local communities. Whether we voted for them or not, Scripture instructs us to pray for those in authority. “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made…for kings, and for all that are in authority.” — 1 Timothy 2:1–2
God, give our leaders wisdom. Give them compassion. Give them integrity. Remind them that leadership is stewardship and that the lives affected by their decisions are more than statistics—they are people.
But while we're praying for Washington, we had better pray for the Church too.
Lord, help us.
We need spiritual leaders who desire Your presence more than platforms, Your truth more than popularity, and souls more than money.
Guard Your people from false teaching and from a gospel that promises prosperity while neglecting repentance, holiness, salvation, sacrifice, obedience, and the cross.
Give us pastors who will preach the Word when it is popular and when it is not. Give us churches where the broken can come without being exploited, the lost can hear the Gospel, the wounded can heal, and Jesus—not personalities, titles, attendance numbers, followers, or finances—is at the center.
And God, please cover our children.
Our babies need us.
They should be able to walk into a school concerned about a test—not whether they will make it home alive. They are growing up with access to things generations before them could scarcely imagine. Drugs, violence, destructive influences, hopelessness, and pressures can reach them before many parents even realize what they are facing.
And perhaps most heartbreaking of all, some of our children know everything about social media, celebrities, trends, and culture, but very little about the works and ways of God.
We cannot place all of that responsibility on the schools.
Parents, grandparents, pastors, churches—we have work to do.
Psalm 78 tells us not to hide the works of God from the next generation, but to tell our children about His strength and His wonderful works, so that the generation to come might know Him.
So today I am praying:
God, heal our nation.
Give wisdom to our leaders.
Bring integrity back to leadership.
Bring truth back to our pulpits.
Bring compassion back to our churches.
Bring prayer back into our homes.
Protect our schools.
Cover our teachers.
Strengthen our parents.
And save our children.
And before we point our fingers at everybody else, Lord, start with us.
Search our hearts. Correct what is wrong in us. Teach us to love our neighbors even when we disagree. Give us courage to stand for what is right without losing the character of Christ while doing it.
Because legislation alone cannot heal a heart.
Money cannot save a soul.
Politics cannot replace the Gospel.
And popularity cannot substitute for the presence of God.
Lord, we need You.
We need You in our government.
We need You in our churches.
We need You in our schools.
We need You in our homes.
We need You in our families.
And we need You in us.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face…”
2 Chronicles 7:14
People of God, this is not the time to panic. This is the time to pray.
