Received some Circle K International treasures over the weekend and got to hear these records that probably haven’t been played in decades. Thanks for sharing, Hunter!
The stamps tell their own story. The smaller one shipped first from Kiwanis’ HQ in Chicago in February of 1965. It then made its way to Huntsville, TX in November of 1966 and then to Stillwater, OK in January of 1967. Based on the content, I imagine it would have been played at Kiwanis meetings as an orientation about what a Circle K Club is, how the organization started, and how the clubs bridge “town and gown” for college men to build connections to local business. The projections for 1000 clubs and 25,000 members in the near future was a fun line.
The second, larger album features popular music of the time and a voiceover discussing the 1973-75 theme of “Challenge to Action” and priorities that Circle K Clubs should address. Student activism, garbage and protecting the environment, preventing the spread of STIs, supporting and rehabilitating the incarcerated are discussed. The accompanying slideshow on a film strip can be played on the Dukane 500 and has to be manually advanced with the yellow k**b. The images seem to be stock photos of the era that go along with the aforementioned themes, in addition to some text slides that show statistics.
What a fun little excursion into CKI history!
