Reaching into the sweetener bowl at a coffee shop, I picked up a packet. The slogan on it read, “Always trust in yourself.”

I’m not sure why sugar packets are now dispensing pep talks, but I have to disagree with this one.

We cannot trust in ourselves. As followers of Christ, our trust is in God – not in self.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9

In Scripture, the “heart” is more than our emotions. It’s the core of who we are – the center of our desires and motives. Our actions flow from it. And often, those actions are self-serving, rooted in a desire for comfort, control, or approval.

No thanks. The self-seeking center of me isn’t a trustworthy guide.

But when we shift our trust to the only One who is worthy of it, something changes. He reshapes our hearts from the inside out, aligning our desires with His will instead of our own.

That sugar packet slogan sounds nice, but a closer look reveals the flaw.

I’ll choose a different source for truth. One that offers real wisdom – not the artificial kind the world hands out so freely.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” Psalm 28:7 ESV
