Type 1
Homer’s Odyssey: The Phaeacians of Scheria – “bloodless dogooders”, they are disciplined, proper, orderly, and conventional. They are concerned with etiquette, duty, and doing the right thing. The king’s castle is perfect. The sailors stay precisely on course. They strive to be paragons of virtue, but are also rigid, self‐righteous, and judgmental. (p. 392)
Dante’s Inferno: Passion of Anger – The Wrathful are so deep in anger that they are covered in mud and fighting each other naked, with their faces scarred by rage. With teeth they tear each other limb from limb. (p. 403)

Type 2
Homer’s Odyssey: Calypso – She pampers Odysseus with food and everything he needs. But she doesn’t want him to leave. When she lets him go – she shows the high side of 2. (p. 353)
Dante’s Inferno: Passion of Pride – Lucifer’s fall creates the deep cone‐shaped cavity of Dante’s Hell. Traitors chew on Lucifer. Pride causes the prideful to put their will above the will of nature or God and thus subverts the natural flow the universal order.

Type 3
Homer’s Odyssey: Sailing by Skylla and Charybdis and Landing at Thrinakia – Sailing by Skylla and Charybdis Odysseus’ single‐minded focus achieves his goal. At Thrinakia when he is absent, his men feast on the sun god, Helios’, cattle assuming for themselves the power and privileges that belong to the sun god. The men are destroyed. (p. 313)
Dante’s Inferno: Passion of Vanity (Deceit) – living for the eyes of others fuels a false image (deception). The alchemists have leprosy. The impersonators are rabid. The counterfeiters have dropsy (swollen with fluid they cannot move). The liars reek from a constant burning fever. Neglecting truth and virtue in one’s true self becomes an obvious internal rot.

Type 4
Homer’s Odyssey: Hades and The Sirens – Odysseus hears from spirits in the land of the dead about their regret for their choices in life and envy for those still living. We can get stuck in a Hades of our own making if we don’t just visit our internal spaces of grief, but live our whole lives around the aching sense of loss and failed dreams. The Sirens know the depth of human longing and temptation. (p. 269)
Dante’s Inferno: Passion of Envy – Envy is a deep melancholy that reflects a need to suffer and a vision of life based on what is lacking and how you stack up against others. Suicides do violence to themselves by making their own pain paramount. These souls become barren trees in a black underworld forest. Harpies torment them by snapping their branches causing pain. The wounds bleed briefly, releasing pleas for pity from the trapped soul. (p. 284)

Type 5
Homer’s Odyssey: Hermes and Circe – guard and use secret knowledge. They are self‐contained keepers of secret knowledge. They share their guarded wisdom strategically – and only with those they deem intellectually worthy. Circe says to Hermes “You have mind in you no magic can enchant.” (p. 230)
Dante’s Inferno: Passion of Avarice – withholding due to fear of depletion. Those who expressed avarice and those who spent without moderation move in an eternal circle pushing against each other. (p. 244)

Type 6
Homer’s Odyssey: The Laestrygonian disaster – Laestrygonians are powerful enough to fear no one, but they react aggressively and assume anyone approaching must be an enemy. Fixated on negative expectations and see only threats. 11 of Odysseus’ 12 ships are destroyed during the attack. (p. 186)
Dante’s Inferno: Compulsive Doubters – Souls with indecision are relentlessly stung by hornets and mindlessly chase a banner expressing allegiance that stands for nothing, symbolizing the way they failed to overcome their doubt and take a stand in life. (p. 202)

Type 7
Homer’s Odyssey: Aeolia and Ae**us, the master of the winds – A sumptuous island that has no fixed location. Life is easy and fun. Odysseus’ crew think the bag containing the winds has gold or silver, so they open it and end up back on the island, where they are expelled. Focusing on getting their share of the comforts of life causes troubles. (p. 138)
Dante’s Inferno: Passion of Gluttony – indulgence – comfort seeking, thrill‐seeking, pleasure‐chasing. Gluttonous spirits suffer complete deprivation. They are pressed together like paving stones, howling with hunger, coated in stinking slime. (p. 153)

Type 8
Homer’s Odyssey: The Cyclops – “lawless brutes” full of anger and express that anger (p. 94)
Dante’s Inferno: Passion of Lust – stubborn unwillingness for impulses to be restrained by any boundaries. In deep denial and completely unrepentant – their only regret is being punished. Lustful spirits are trapped helplessly in a shifting black wind that they are powerless to control. (p. 110)
