When Megan Torok crossed the stage at the University of Alabama this year with a degree in communications and public relations, she carried far more than a diploma with her. She carried years of commitment, sacrifice, and steady encouragement from a father who spent two decades serving his country and his family.

The daughter of United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Gregory Torok, Megan grew up watching what true dedication looks like. Her father retired from the Army after 20 years of service so his children could finally put down roots and experience stability together as a family. That decision shaped Megan deeply.

Today, that same spirit of commitment shines through her own life. From serving as a team lead in the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs to leading creative projects at UA Capstone Agency, Megan embraced every opportunity to grow, lead, and serve others during her college journey.

“Two traits I have learned from my dad include commitment and honesty,” Megan shared. “I always give my full effort to anything I’m working on and I will always do what is right.”

Folds of Honor is proud to celebrate Megan and the incredible future ahead of her.

Lorenzo Alfonso’s journey to graduation was built on perseverance, purpose, and the example set by his father.

This year, Lorenzo graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in business administration focused on finance investment analysis and financial planning. Along the way, he earned his series 65 license, worked in wealth management, served as a presidential ambassador, and dedicated himself to helping others better understand financial literacy.

But long before the classroom and career milestones, Lorenzo learned what hard work looked like from home.

His father, United States Marine Corps Sergeant Larry Alfonso, enlisted in 1998 to create a better future for his family. Through deployments, long hours, and years of service, he built a life rooted in sacrifice, perseverance, and service to others. Values that now shape Lorenzo’s own path.

Today, Lorenzo steps into his future carrying not only a degree, but a legacy of resilience and purpose.

Today, on National Higher Education Day, we celebrate the opportunities that education makes possible.

For the 2025-2026 school year, Folds of Honor awarded scholarships to more than 7,700 deserving higher education recipients, empowering students to pursue their goals, build meaningful futures, and carry forward the legacies of those who served.

Behind every scholarship is a story of resilience, sacrifice, and potential. And behind every opportunity is a community of supporters helping make those futures possible.

Thank you to our generous donors for making these scholarships possible. Your support ensures that the sacrifices of our military and first responders are never forgotten.

When Destiny Duerson was growing up, her father’s military service often meant long periods apart. Each homecoming came with new stories, new challenges, and new sacrifices.

United States Army Sergeant Marc Duerson Jr. joined the Army at just 17 years old and served around the world, carrying both visible and invisible wounds home with him. Through it all, he taught Destiny resilience, determination, and how to keep moving forward no matter the obstacle.

This year, Destiny graduated from Howard University with a degree in biology. Along the way, she earned Dean’s List honors, mentored children through Camp Beyond, and supported fellow military-connected students through Howard’s Office of Military and Veteran Services.

Now, she hopes to pursue a future in forensics and continue making a difference through service to others.

Folds of Honor is proud to celebrate Destiny and the incredible future ahead of her.
