The Owasso Police Department is asking residents to be on alert after multiple package thefts were reported Thursday afternoon in several neighborhoods across the city.

According to police, the thefts occurred between approximately 2:40 p.m. and 3:40 p.m. in neighborhoods located between 96th Street North and 106th Street North, and from Garnett Road east to 129th East Avenue.

Owasso Police Clarify Fireworks Laws Ahead of Independence Day Celebrations

As Americans prepare to celebrate the nation’s 250th Independence Day, the Owasso Police Department is reminding residents that fireworks remain largely prohibited within Owasso city limits despite recent changes to Oklahoma law.

According to the department, the passage of Oklahoma’s “Rocket’s Red Glare Act” has created confusion among some residents who believe fireworks are now legal statewide. Officials emphasized that this is not the case.

Governor Kevin Stitt signed the legislation into law in May, expanding the types of fireworks that may be sold and used in certain areas of Oklahoma, including bottle rockets. However, the law applies only to private property located in unincorporated areas of the state and specifically preserves the authority of municipalities to regulate fireworks within their own boundaries.

The City of Owasso’s existing ordinance remains unchanged and continues to prohibit the sale, use, display, firing, igniting, lighting, or discharge of fireworks within city limits.

City officials noted that several items are exempt from the prohibition, including:

• Sparklers
• Fountains
• Pinwheels
• Other stationary fireworks that are not explosive or noise-making in nature

Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local regulations before making plans for Independence Day celebrations.
