Since 1974, the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society (GHHS) has been dedicated to the welfare and protection of animals. The organization is an independent, registered 501(c)3 nonprofit operating under no-kill standards. We are focused on helping orphaned, injured and abused pets by providing them safe shelter, care and nutrition which will help them lead happy, healthy lives. In addition, our mission

is to relieve the suffering and the prevention of cruelty to animals. We do not receive any government funding, and rely solely on contributions made by members of the community. Surrenders are appointment based- if you need to surrender an animal, please call the shelter to make an appointment.

Meet Sassy! 💖

Sassy was adopted in October 2025, but through no fault of her own, she was recently returned and is once again looking for a family to call her own.

True to her name, Sassy is a spirited, energetic girl with a sweet personality and a love for adventure. She enjoys spending time with her people, rides well in the car, and is always ready for fun. One of her favorite activities is chasing feather wand toys—she can play for hours!

Sassy gets along well with cats and does great with kids, making her a wonderful companion for the right family. She prefers to be the only dog in the home, as other dogs just aren’t her thing.
Because Sassy has an adventurous streak, she’ll need to be kept on a secure harness whenever she’s outside, as she may take off exploring if given the chance. While treats aren’t the way to win her heart, plenty of attention and playtime certainly are!

Sassy is spayed, fixed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. She’s ready to find a forever home that will appreciate her playful energy, sweet nature, and one-of-a-kind personality.

Don’t let Maggie’s gray muzzle fool you—this senior sweetheart still has plenty of pep in her step! 🐾

At 10 years old, Maggie (aka “Maggie Moo” 💕) is proof that age is just a number. She loves chasing tennis balls, going for walks, and showing off her excellent leash manners. She’s crate trained, full of personality, and always ready to spend time with her favorite people.

Now, Maggie does come with a few disclaimers: she’s not a fan of baths, she can turn any toy into confetti in record time, and she’s a bit of an escape artist—so secure fencing is a must! She’d do best in a home with kids 10+ and would prefer to be your one-and-only pet, though she may be okay with the right submissive dog. If you have another dog and are thinking about adopting Maggie- a meet and greet is a must!

Slapjack urgently needs a foster! ❤️

Life in the shelter has been tough on this handsome guy. Slapjack spends a lot of his time growling at people, which can be intimidating, but we recently spent some one-on-one time with him and discovered there's much more to him than meets the eye.

When approached calmly, Slapjack leaned right into chin scratches and happily accepted pets. His tough-guy act seems to be just that—an act. We believe the shelter environment may be causing him a lot of stress, making it difficult for his true personality to shine through.

What Slapjack really needs is a foster home where he can decompress, feel safe, and show us who he truly is. A foster could help us learn more about his personality and give him the best chance at finding his forever family.

Waylon’s adventure today ❤️

The first time we took Waylon on an outing, he was nervous about getting in and out of the car. Today was his third adventure, and he jumped right in both times! He still prefers to lay down while the car is moving, but that’s huge progress. 🥰

This boy is absolutely full of adventure, and every hike shows off more of his amazing personality. He didn’t hesitate to cross a stream by balancing across a log like a pro. We also discovered that he LOVES water... but only on his own terms, because bath time is still a hard no. 🫣😂

One of the sweetest moments was watching him stick close to my son while he explored the woods geocaching. Waylon was determined to keep up with him every step of the way. I truly think he’d make an incredible companion for an active family and would watch over older kids like a hawk. ❤️

His biggest surprise of the day? A snapping turtle! Let’s just say he about jumped right out of his fur when he spotted it. 😂

Waylon is ready for a family of his own to take him on all the adventures his heart desires. 💙
