A huge THANK YOU to several Oskaloosa teens, led by their friend Wyatt DeCook, for tackling a massive pile of scrap metal and trash at Cedar Bluffs State Preserve in southwest Mahaska County. This debris had been sitting there amongst trees for decades — long before the area became a county park.

Wyatt’s mission is to help restore the site, making the park cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable for both wildlife and visitors. He believes everyone who visits the preserve should be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the woods without seeing old trash and scrap metal.

So far, Wyatt and the other teens have spent around 15 hours helping clean up the park and improve the habitat for wildlife while making the area more beautiful for the community.

Thank you, Wyatt and friends, for your hard work and dedication! 👏🌳

Wyatt serves as a Park Steward volunteer for Mahaska County Conservation. If you’d like to volunteer and help care for our parks, let us know!

Introducing...A Fishing Equipment Checkout Program! If you do not have a fishing pole and tackle but would like to go fishing, then come check some out through Mahaska County Conservation at the Environmental Learning Center.

* Check them out at the front desk of the ELC
* Be 18 and older and show a valid ID
* Limited number of poles and tackle available
* Follow Iowa fishing regulations
* Children must be supervised
* Return equipment clean, undamaged, and at scheduled time

This program was made possible thanks to a $4,300 grant from the Golden Goose Club of Oskaloosa, which funded the purchase of new fishing reels. We also thank volunteer Doug Tomlinson for helping make this program a reality.

Get outside and go fishing! 🐟
