🐾 $5 FRIDAY — This one is bigger than just one dog. 🐾
What started with finding Jasmine has quickly turned into something much bigger.
Finding Jasmine led us to her sister, who is now safely with Kahu too. ❤️ Meet Violet.
And then we learned there were more.
There is a momma currently caring for 10 puppies who are only 6 days old, along with several other adult dogs in the same area. We're looking at 15+ dogs who could use some help right now.
And 15 dogs can become 50+ dogs REALLY fast when there are intact animals and accidental litters involved.
So instead of waiting for that to happen, we're trying to get ahead of it.
We're working with our partners at Marion County Animal Services to help provide spay/neuter services. I'm helping transport dogs to appointments, fostering where I can, and bringing food and supplies to help care for the dogs who remain with their owners.
This isn't about judging anyone for their circumstances. It's about meeting people where they are, providing resources, and preventing a much bigger problem before it happens.
Today, Jasmine and Violet have their intake appointments, and I'm going to try to get another adult female in as well. 🤞
For this week's $5 Friday, we could REALLY use our village.
We need puppy pads, trash bags, cleaning supplies, canned puppy food, dog food and GAS because I'm about to be doing a whole lot of driving. 😂
Every $5 adds up. Every bag of food helps. Every box of puppy pads helps. Every share gets this in front of someone who might be able to help.
Most of all, we need prayers. There are a lot of moving pieces here, but there's also an opportunity to make a huge difference.

God works in ways I will never understand.
Today I buried Tonka.
My heart is absolutely shattered. I loved that little boy more than I can explain, and after laying him to rest, I just couldn't be home. I needed to drive. I needed to get away from the house and out of my own head for a little while.
And on that drive, I found Jasmine.
I recognized the people who had her and stopped to offer them dog food. She was scared, dirty, covered in fleas and clearly needed some help.
Then she walked up to me and gave me the biggest hug.
That was it.
I talked with her owners, and they agreed to surrender her to Kahu K-9 Rescue.
So on the same day I buried one baby, I came home carrying another.
I don't believe for one second that Jasmine replaces Tonka. Nothing could. My heart hurts so badly tonight that I honestly don't even know what to do with it.
But I also don't believe I found this little girl today by accident.
I believe Tonka sent her to me.
Maybe he knew his mom needed something to hold onto tonight. Maybe he knew there was another scared little dog out there who needed me. Maybe somehow he knew we needed each other.
Because Jasmine needed someone to stop for her today.
And I desperately needed that hug.
Tonight she's clean. She's been treated for fleas and worms. Her belly is full. She's warm, she's safe, and she's sleeping somewhere she doesn't have to be afraid.
I wish more than anything that Tonka were here too.
I would trade anything to have him back.
But since I can't, I'm going to believe my little boy had something to do with putting me on that road at exactly the right time.
She needed me as much as I needed her.

This is the update I have been dreading having to make.
We lost Tonka. 💔
Despite treatment and everything being done to give his little body a chance to fight, parvo took him from us.
I don't really have the right words tonight. I'm beyond devastated.
Tonka came to us as a tiny 6–7 week old stray with an unknown past. He spent over a week with me happy, playful and showing no signs that anything was wrong. In that short amount of time, I fell completely in love with him.
The truth is, I wanted to keep him.
I had already started imagining him as my forever dog. I pictured him paddle boarding with me, going everywhere with me, growing up beside me and becoming my little shot gun riding adventure buddy.
When he got sick, I begged. I prayed. I bargained with God. I would've done anything if it meant getting to bring that little boy home.
But sometimes, despite everything we do, we still lose them.
And this one hurts more than I know how to put into words.
Rescue gives you some of the greatest moments of your life, but it also absolutely breaks your heart. We don't get to choose which animals leave a permanent mark on us. Sometimes they walk into our lives for only a few days and somehow manage to take up a permanent place in our hearts.
Tonka was one of those dogs for me.
I'm sorry this isn't a better update. I know so many of you were rooting for him, praying for him and asking how he was doing. Thank you for loving a little puppy most of you never even had the chance to meet.
I wish love had been enough to save him.

🚨 TONKA NEEDS OUR HELP 🚨
Yesterday was supposed to be Tonka's happy ending.
After spending about a week and a half with us happy, playful, eating normally and showing no signs of illness, our little 6–7 week old stray headed off to his new home.
Hours later, we received the call no rescue ever wants to get.
Tonka tested positive for parvo. 💔
Because Tonka came to us as a very young stray, we have absolutely no history of what he may have been exposed to before coming into our care. We may never know when or where he was exposed—we only know that while he was here, he showed no indication that anything was wrong.
His adopters made the difficult decision to relinquish him back to Kahu K9 so we could take over his care. We reimbursed the veterinary expenses they had already paid, and Tonka is now back under the rescue and getting the treatment he needs.
This was an expense we absolutely weren't prepared for, but there was never a question that we were going to help him.
Tonka is ours again, and we're going to fight for this little guy. ❤️

🚨 URGENT — PLEDGES & FOSTER NEEDED 🚨
We were contacted today about this 3-year-old Rottweiler/Malinois mix who desperately needs help.
He is neutered, microchipped and reportedly up to date on vaccinations, but as you can see, he is also significantly underweight and needs proper care and evaluation.
His current situation has become increasingly unsafe. We were told there was an incident involving a goat, and there are now concerns involving a neighbor threatening to shoot him.
We would like to help—but taking in a dog like this responsibly means making sure we have the foster placement and financial support to do so.
Right now we are looking for:
🐾 PLEDGES toward veterinary care, food and any other needs once evaluated
🏡 AN EXPERIENCED FOSTER — preferably without livestock or small animals
🤝 RESCUE ASSISTANCE if another qualified organization has appropriate placement available
📣 SHARES to help us reach the right people
At this time, we do not have enough information to make claims about his overall temperament or compatibility with other animals. Given the reported livestock incident, any potential placement would need to be carefully evaluated.

We don't want to make promises we can't keep—but we also don't want to look away from a dog who clearly needs someone advocating for him.

🐾 Happy Tails Peggy!!! ❤️
The puppies are officially 8 weeks old and let's be real... Peggy has been DONE with motherhood for a minute. 😂 She raised her babies, did her job, and was more than ready for them to start packing their tiny bags.
Sandi Baer Lorensen has been patiently waiting for Peggy to be ready to come home, and today was finally the day. Even better? Peggy already loves her. ❤️
But this one was a hard goodbye for me.
I remember seeing Peggy in that trap for the first time—scared, covered in scabies and very obviously pregnant. She looked at me with the softest little doe eyes I've ever seen, and that was pretty much it. She had my heart.
Then we navigated everything together. Her pregnancy, having her puppies, raising those babies and watching them grow... and somehow they're already 8 weeks old and everyone is ready for their next chapter.
This is the bittersweet part of rescue.
My heart is happy because I know I did my job as Kahu. I was Peggy's guardian, protector and caretaker when she needed one. Now she doesn't need me anymore. She has her person.
But knowing that doesn't make saying goodbye easy.
People ask me all the time how I do this. How I bring these dogs into my home, care for them every day, fall in love with them and then eventually hand their leash to someone else.
Honestly? I really don't know.
I bond with these dogs. I learn their quirks and routines. I know what scares them and what makes their tails wag. I watch them go from scared and unsure to realizing they're finally safe.
And then I let them go.
Every single one leaves carrying a little piece of my heart with them.
Today, Peggy took hers. ❤️

Let’s be real… Skye may be going through a little ugly duckling phase right now. 😂❤️ But we happen to think she’s PERFECT.
Skye is around 7 months old and sweet as can be! Her momma, Bonnie, has already found her forever home, and now it’s Skye’s turn. 🥹

Skye has a genetic mutation that causes her unique combination of hair and baldness. She may never have the luxurious flowing locks of her canine friends, but who needs hair when you've got ✨personality✨?
She doesn't know she looks different. She doesn't care. She just knows she wants someone to love, a comfy place to sleep, and a family to call her own.

This little guy is Tonka, a suspected Dachshund/Terrier mix who came to us as a stray after being abandoned. 💔 Thankfully, his rough start hasn't stopped him from being an absolute sweetheart!
Tonka is only 7–8 weeks old, and we expect him to stay on the smaller side, likely under 15 lbs when fully grown.
🐶 Great with other dogs
👧 Great with kids
💉 First DHPP vaccine completed
🪱 First deworming completed
💕 Sweet, playful little puppy ready for his fresh start!
Tonka still has some growing and vetting to do, but we're accepting applications now. Puppies and small dogs tend to get interest fast, so if you think Tonka could be the newest member of your family, don't wait to apply!

What started as a desire to simply help the dogs that needed someone has grown into a whole community standing behind our mission.
