WE GOT HER!

Foster Nirva and her family were driving home from a doctor's appointment when they spotted this dog trying to cross a very busy road. Nirva gasped, leading to gasps from her husband and son because, responding to Nirva's gasp, they looked around and saw the little dog too. And the cars...fast moving cars.

They pulled onto to the road shoulder. The dog was scared. They didn't want her darting into the cars while trying to get away from their help. They flanked her.

Fortunately, Nirva isn't just a rescuer....she's a dog whisperer. Nirva was still. She cooed, sat and coaxed. Eventually the dog came up to her.

The dog is a female. She has a messed up foot we'll need to see to right away. She's small. She's safe. And she's lucky.

Nirva named her Alyna. Alyna will need her tests first, her bloodwork. We'll need to figure out her twisted foot. We'll need to sterilize and vaccinate and treat her.

And we'll need to convince her that the world can be soft and kind.

He might look like a prop from a sci-fi movie, but he's real...a real dog, little, hairless and nearly starved.

It will not be a special effect when you see him healthy and robust. That will be real too. That is what we'll do for him, you and and us together.

We knew Candy had a hernia - it was huge and obvious. We fixed it. There was a second one and we fixed that also in a second surgery.

The third and fourth surgeries were for mammary tumors. Now Candy is all better! She's also much happier. Candy is standing at the threshold of a brand new life, one in which she'll be treasured always, fed well, will love and be loved freely, and will never be abandoned.

We try to strike a balance here sharing with you the sad cases we're caring for and the happy outcomes that you enable with your support. Sad stories get more attention, gory ones most of all. We personally feel the need to be positive and hopeful, and avoid the trappings of exploitation. In Tijuana and Cabo in particular, dogs experience so much misery. Our own skin has thickened somewhat since we started doing this work, but we cry many tears - over what we see, over the scale of hardship, over the limits of our own resources sometimes, and certainly for those we cannot help, or lose despite our efforts. We are taking steps to change how things are long-term. We're sponsoring clinics and sterilization and slowly building a culture of rescue and rescue values that someday will self-sustain (we hope), as it does now in Vallarta (where our work first started).

All this to say, in every post we make, there is hope. In every story we tell, there is positive change.

Just look at Candy! You can see it in her eyes now: A brighter future.

911: Changing sorry fate.

Stars align to create each beautiful and terrible moment. Sometimes, like for this poor dog, The Terrible is a path to the less terrible; to the Beautiful even.

You can say it’s because Grace’s passenger had to p*e. You can say it was Grace’s passenger needing to p*e created the precise delay that caused Grace and Passenger to witness this dog being run over by a car.

You can say, in Tijuana, where thousands of stray dogs suffer and need to be helped, it is getting hit by a car – where tragedy is instant versus the slow-motion tragedy most other stray dogs will face – that gets a dog off the street; that got this dog help…immediately.

“Or,” as Grace says, “If we were just a little earlier, maybe we’d have seen the dog trying to cross, and we’d have called to him, and he wouldn’t have gotten hit at all.”

But the fact of the matter is this dog was run over by a car trying to cross a busy road in Tijuana. The fact of the matter is rescuer Grace witnessed the accident, ran and fetched the dog, took him to the vet - immediately. The fact of the matter is: He’s safe now.

He has a big cut. He has a broken leg, or broken hip, or both. And under that scruffy coat, he’s so thin. You can count every single rib.

He needs help. He’s getting help. He’s got us, all of us. Right?

Hospice girl Cosette is doing beautifully! She is frail as a feather, blind as a bat, feisty as a weasel and absolutely loving her life in the tender care of our friends Silja and Alex at

Cosette was found on the street in Tijuana. On the street! Blind, old, weak, turning in circles and all alone. Maybe hundreds of people walked right by her, their own lives too full up with hardship or sadness or something less readily forgivable, each of them doing nothing. But before you curse them, just consider what one might witness - the sheer quantity of stray dogs and the breadth of their daily suffering - to not even pay an old blind dog turning circles in the street any mind at all. We'd like to tell you that Cosette's terrible hardship was uniquely terrible or hard. But it wasn't, and it isn't. That is why we are working so hard every day to try to change things in Tijuana. That's what our fosters and fellow rescuers work for every day. And it's an important part of what your donations enable.

For each suffering dog we help, there are 10,000 that aren't suffering just yet, but will be...it's the fate of a dog on the street. We continue to expand our community efforts in Tijuana - our free clinics, education and outreach. It may seem impossible that someday it won't be like it is now at all, and every dog will be routinely vaccinated, sterilized, kept forever, fed and loved and treated well. But we are here to tell you: It is possible. Maybe it's even true already where you live. We sure hope so.

Rest in peace to our little frenchie Bonni, found crippled and abandonned and taken in by our beloved Grace. Grace loved Bonni, and Bonni loved everything in the world. Bonni's life had been so hard and at Grace's she was so easily contented. Bonni loved soft blankets and the other dogs. She loved to eat and she sure loved Grace.

We had pictured a different future for Bonni, but turns out she was already home.

Please send your soft thoughts to Grace, who found and nursed and nurtured our little Bonni girl, and last night had to let her go.

We know you've been wondering about Chili's ear surgery. Here's the skinny:

As soon as we raised the money ($635, thank you!) we scheduled Chili's surgery to remove growths from both of her ears. The first appointment was now two Fridays ago. At the first appointment, Chili was not cleared for surgery - too much inflammation, too little platelets. She was sent home with medicine and supplements.

This past Friday, the doctor performed surgery on one of Chili's ears - not both as planned. One ear remained too inflamed. We'll try again in a week. We'll give her the prescribed medicine, bed rest and extra love. The polyps in Chili's ears are very painful. We, like you, want her to be all better. And so does Harlin, Chili's blind cattle dog BFF!

The fact that one ear is done is progress! Let's hope for easy healing, greater comfort, and a banishment of inflammation so that Chili can have the surgery she so needs.

Multiple procedures were not budgeted for, but we'll worry about that later. For now, if you can, please send little Chili the chi your love. Thank you.

Survey time! What's your preference, big ears or brindle stripes?!

Big ears, brindle stripes, sweet souls, gentle hearts, survivors: Whatever your preference, Gladiator, the brindle boy on the left, or Gotcha, big-eared gal on the right - conquered the curse of their birth as Baja strays and have a destiny of love to fulfill with someone special....maybe even you!

Gotcha and Gladiator arrived this week to Sunny Sky's Animal Rescue and are soon to be adoptable there! Thank you Sunny Sky's for welcoming these young under-20-pounders! We are so grateful for your kindness! Thank you to flight angel Tracey for including these wonders in your itinerary! And great big thanks to our partners at Baja Safe Humane Society in San Jose del Cabo for saving the lives of Gladiator, Gotcha and so many other beautiful, desperate dogs!

There is so much love in these dogs. There is so much love in every dog. That is why we are so compelled to tirelessly help them. Dogs are the best!

Please do not doubt that fear IS suffering. Please do not doubt that fear alone can break a dog down.

We received many comments and messages yesterday about poor Shakes. Shakes was found quaking – there is video and it is hard to watch. Many – including us – thought initially it was distemper, or a neurological condition. It wasn’t. It was shock – shallow pulse, low body temp, tremors.

So we ask…why shock? Was the dog hit? No. Did he have a head injury? No. Was it cold, was he wet? No, and no. The answer comes from those on the ground, the ones who spotted him, who went to him, who called to us. The answer comes from the woman who spoke softly to him, soft enough to get close; the woman her reached out her gentle him and heard poor Shakes scream, who watched him roll on his back and p**s himself.

Why was Shakes shaking? It was fear.

Why is Shakes no longer shaking? It is love.

Shakes stopped shaking as soon as foster Bianka wrapped her arms around him and let him hear her heartbeat. Shakes stopped shaking as soon as he smelled Bianka’s kindness – yes, dogs can smell that, for real! Just like dogs can smell the opposite of kindness, and shake.

So, Shakes does not have distemper, or an injury, or a condition. While it is difficult to fully rule out epilepsy with such a limited sample size, the fact that love stopped Shakes’s shaking does tell us that stopping-shaking is a response to something (love/safety), just like his shaking was a response to something (danger/cruelty). We are very grateful for such a collective of concern for this boy, thank you.

Shakes does have issues we must address: He has skin issues, is very very thin under that fur, has the usual tick-borne diseases, malnutrition and anemia. Shakes also has us, all of us.

We have excellent vets in Tijuana, and excellent humans fostering our dogs. Hopefully we have enough excellent people reading this as well to cover Shakes's vet bills, too.
