52 dogs sterilized yesterday! Countless pregnancies (and misery) prevented!!!
In addition to the hundreds of street dogs we sterilize each year, our newest program has now sterilized over a hundred owned pets in one of Tijuana’s most humble neighborhoods. This work is so important because this is the work that builds trust, that educates, that changes culture so that the kind of rescue support we offer is needed less and less.
“Spay or neuter your pet” – no one did this fifty years ago! Down south, the pivot point to spay/neuter practices came a bit later. All over, the evolution remains in progress, but is taking hold. In the areas of Mexico where Mutt Mutt Engine started, sterilization became the norm! A rescue culture took hold, and our particular help isn’t needed in Vallarta anymore!
So in Tijuana – a much larger and poorer city – we’re planting the seeds that will take root and grow, so that someday there aren’t dogs on the street, and there is much, much less suffering – for dogs, and those who love them too.
Yesterday, our second dedicated clinic took place. We sent each participant home with preventatives and a big bag of food. It is an undertaking made possible by foster Rita’s commitment and organization, a secret sponsor who knows that rescuing dogs is super important but making it so fewer dogs need rescue is – if you will – the head of the snake, and by all our supporters and donors! If you’d like to help grow this program, it’s only around $40 to sponsor a dog (or cat!) and we’re already working on planning our next clinic (in August)!
Rita, thank you for your hands-on work, for spotting a real need, and giving us the opportunity to do something about it!
