THE ROAD Theatre Company

THE ROAD Theatre Company www.roadtheatre.org Since the Road was founded in 1991, we have built a reputation for supporting, nurturing, and presenting new works.

We are also deeply invested in our NoHo community and the neighborhood’s revitalization, and involve ourselves in community service and educational outreach. Our Mission is to:
Support world, American and West Coast premieres of theatrical works which introduce new voices and new thoughts to the American stage. Introduce younger audiences to the world of theatre through our mainstage productions,

workshops and our free weekly reading series
Further establish our resident company as a leader and champion of new works in Los Angeles and the nation. We believe it is essential for the health of the American ethos to advance the larger theatrical conversation of our national culture. Through this dialogue we animate and inspire both our artists and audiences with the realization that through art and action we are lifted into the searching of soul, the revelation of humanity, the awareness that we are not alone and the struggle to make sense of our existence on this earth – as it is and as we wish it to be.

SPF 18 - Sunday 7/19 at 7:30 pm THE ONE ACTS! "The Things We Keep" written by David J. Valdez, directed by Matt Hill. Late at night in a self-storage facility, Adam sorts through his late husband’s belongings, trying to outrun grief he’s been avoiding for months. Nick, the young night attendant, ends up stuck on-site and almost accidentally becomes Adam’s witness and helper. They find a letter in the husband’s handwriting addressed to “Michael,” revealing the husband confided in someone else during his illness because Adam tried too hard to fix him instead of simply listening. The discovery forces Adam to confront guilt, betrayal, and love, while Nick admits he once left someone too soon out of fear. Adam finally leaves with the sense that people are like storage units—packed tight with what they can’t say, waiting for someone to open the door.

When told that Juan and Fabienne would be executed, he desperately tries to save them, rescuing only one Juan. Juan promises to save Daren while Mike stays to do what he can to prevent mass killing. SPF 18 - Sunday 7/19 at 11am The Inevitability of Falling written by Kevin Theis, directed by Elizabeth Herron. Bill Griffith has done and seen it all: traveled the world, enjoyed every luxury, denied himself nothing. But now…Bill is heading into his eighties widowed, half-blind and as bitter as a man who yearns to do it all over again could be. We travel in this play through Bill’s latest “adventure”: checking into the Bloomdale Retirement Community. During the course of the play, we meet his son Jack, Bloomdale administrator Kyle and sunny waitress Lizzy as they help him navigate - and sometimes battle against - his new reality: life in assisted living.

SPF 18 - Saturday 7/18 at 8pm “MAPP” written by Angela J. Davis, directed by Ann Hearn Tobolowsky. After a bomb explodes in 1957 Cleveland, a phalanx of police officers, following an anonymous tip, bursts into the home of Dollree Mapp, a fiercely independent and wholly ahead-of-her time “Negro businesswoman.” Dollree’s demand to see a search warrant sets in motion an extraordinary — and improbable — chain of events resulting in her arrest and prosecution under Ohio’s draconian obscenity laws and, in a further twist, a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case bearing her name — which ends up having nothing to do with obscenity at all. Fusing elements of comedy, docudrama, and fourth-wall breaking meta-theatre, MAPP mines the inherent theatricality of Dollree’s stranger-than-fiction odyssey through the legal system, the indefatigable spirit of the forgotten “Rosa Parks of the Fourth Amendment,” and the power of moral seriousness to emerge from absurd events.

SPF 17 - Saturday 7/18 at 4pm A FATAL PLACE written by Hallie Palladino, directed by Chelsea Gonzalez. It's the eve of the Trojan War and Iphigenia, a sheltered yet tech savvy teen, has a hopeless crush on sixteen year-old Achilles, the hottest (future) warrior of all time. She adores her powerful father, disdains her protective mother, and worships vengeful Artemis, with a chorus of girls she met on GrapeVine. But when her father pulls her through that illusory looking glass with the false promise of a fairytale wedding she finds herself in a filthy military encampment with the Greek army clamoring for her death. Face to face with her father's monstrous brutality, she races to make amends with her mother, save her baby brother, and seize a heroic moment of agency before facing the knife.

SPF 17 - Saturday 7/18 at 12pm “Orson & Walt in a Bar in Rio” written by Brian Hohlfeld, directed by Rob Brownstein. Based on historical events, “Orson & Walt in a Bar in Rio” is a comedy that imagines a 1941 meeting between Orson Welles, in the midst of a fight with RKO over “The Magnificent Ambersons,” and Walt Disney, reeling from the strike at his Burbank HQ. Walt has an idea to solve both their problems--he'll sell his studio to Welles, allowing him to be independent. They draw, they drink, they discuss art, commerce, communism, magic, and movies, all fueled by Caipirinhas and guitar and climaxing in an arm-wrestling match. The experience leaves both men renewed, inspired, hungover, and remembering why they do what they do in the first place.
