Montgomery County has launched the Be Cool Montgomery campaign!

This program is designed to help the community — especially those who work in extreme heat conditions — understand the warning signs of heat illness and know their rights under Maryland law to water, shade, and rest.

There are two launch events coming up: this Friday, June 5 at 6pm (in Spanish with English interpretation) and Thursday, June 11 at 2pm (in English with Spanish interpretation). The team will also be visiting neighborhoods countywide to share information about heat safety.

Registration links for the launch events and more information about heat safety can be found at:

You Have A Right To Water, Shade, And Rest. To treat heat exhaustion, get to an air-conditioned or shady area, drink water, and use a cooling towel. In case of heat stroke, call 911 immediately and soak them with cool water until emergency services arrive.

Neighbors, we have been working through some website changes and apologize that recent Echo newsletters haven’t been available online. The good news is that they are now! Check them out if you missed them on your doorstep.

The Randolph Civic Association publishes The Echo seven times each year and it is mailed free of charge to all residents.

Grateful thanks to all 20 or so of our neighbors who came out on this beautiful spring Saturday morning to participate in the Randolph Civic Foundation’s Adopt a Road cleanup of Boiling Brook Parkway. We picked up 23 bags worth of trash and junk. A gnarly job but we got it done!

Okay neighbors here’s a BEFORE pic from 4:30pm Saturday 1/25/26. And a DURING pic from 1pm Sunday 1/26/26. Hope you all stay safe and warm in the deep freeze over the next week. Let’s all keep an eye on and care for each other in case anyone needs help! And remember to shovel your sidewalks (or pay someone to do it for you…!)

Sharing info about an upcoming event:

The Izaak Walton League of America, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin invite you to join us for the DMV Winter Salt Week Open House to discover how we can keep our winter roads safe without compromising the health of our local waterways and drinking water.

Did you know just one teaspoon of road salt can permanently pollute five gallons of water? This year’s event features hands-on activities designed to help you become a "smart salter."

Open House (Sat, Jan 31): Join us in person from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Izaak Walton League of America Headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD.

Hands-On Activities: Watch live smart salting demonstrations, participate in stream monitoring at Muddy Branch, and bring your own tap or stream water for free chloride testing.

Community Impact: Learn from experts about practical strategies to protect local ecosystems, reduce infrastructure damage, and safeguard your drinking water.

This event is free and open to the public, including media, government officials, and NGOs. Help us keep freshwater fresh—register now on Eventbrite to save your spot!

Join us to learn how to stay safe while protecting the environment during the winter months at the DMV Winter Salt Week event!
