Today is National Aviation Day. Orville and Wilbur Wright were pioneer aviators in the United States. National Aviation Day is a day when we honor the birthday of Orville Wright. Orville was the first person to successfully fly an airplane on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Here are some aviation trivia and fun facts. Share them with your friends!

*In 2001 Helios, an unmanned solar-powered aircraft broke the record for the highest flight of a non-rocket-powered aircraft. It flew to a height of 96,863 feet above the ground.
*In October, 1967, Major William J. “Pete” Knight broke the record for the fastest airplane. The rocket-powered X-15 A-2 reached a speed of 4,520 miles per hour. This is over six times the speed of sound.
*At any point, there may be up to 5,000 planes in the air at the same time in the United States alone.
*Only 5% of the people in the world have ever been on an airplane.
*Produced in 1933, the Boeing 247 was the first commercial airplane. It carried 10 passengers.
*The United States Armed Forces has over 14,000 aircraft in its inventory.
*Blankets on a plane are rarely washed.
*The majority of passenger seats are blue because this is a calming color.
*The seats in the back of a plane are the safest.
*Over 26 million pieces of luggage are lost or delayed per year. Most of it eventually reaches the owner.

School is about to start back up and we are ready for it! There are lots of things going on in our community for School-aged children!

We offer afterschool activities here at NextGen! We have classes five days a week, beginning Monday, August 24, from 3:00-5:30. NextGen offers homework help, snack time, personal growth education, and monthly targeted learning opportunities such as STEAM, Deductive Reasoning, Cooking, Reduce-Reuse-Recycle, Learning how to Code, Engineering, and more! If you homescool and have a young child (potty-trained 3-8 year olds) Good Outside Nature School is a great opportunity during the day in Wilmore! Email [email protected] for more information!

For Kindergarten through 12th Grade homeschoolers and families, there is a fantastic Homeschool Co-op in Nicholasville called RadArtz Academy. The classes are small, so lots of opportunities for one on one education for your kids, with a wide variety of subject enrichment options. What an exciting, yet busy, couple of weeks! After Camp Case Closed, we learned kitchen safety at Camp Cook & Crunch! We took as many photos as we could, but... Safety First in the Kitchen!

The campers learned about Knife Safety and how to use a knife. They learned about the Claw grip, as well as a few cutting techniques such as Jullienne, Chiffanade, Slice, Dice, Chop, and Mince. They prepped several different meals that they can now take home and cook with an adult for their families!

Best of all, the campers learned to try new things, because you never know what you will discover you like! They ate (and asked for more!) both spinach and green peas! Way to go campers for trying something new!
