Ford rehired approximately 350 veteran engineers after artificial intelligence and automated quality systems failed to deliver expected quality levels in vehicle production.

The automaker discovered that experienced engineers had left before their knowledge could be captured in training data, causing AI systems to fail at detecting design flaws. Ford's vice president of vehicle hardware engineering acknowledged the company "mistakenly thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and ingesting design requirements, that this would produce a high-quality product."

The rehired technical specialists worked to rebuild data pipelines, mentor junior staff, and refine the automated systems themselves. The result: Ford topped the JD Power 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study for the first time since 2010. The case demonstrates that AI systems amplify the quality of their training data rather than generating expertise independently—without experienced human judgment encoded in datasets, automated systems produce mediocrity at scale.
