Woodstock Va. Lions Club

Woodstock Va. Lions Club Lions clubs are recognized for their service to the blind, visually impaired, deaf and hearing impaired. We also support many local charities.

Founded in 1917, Lions Club International is the world’s largest service club organization with 1.3 million members in approximately 46,300 clubs in 206 countries. Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes. Worldwide, Lions clubs are recognized for their service to the blind, visually impaired, deaf and hearing impaired. This service began when Helen Keller challenged

Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness” in 1925. Today, Lions extend their commitment to sight conservation through countless local, national and international efforts working with eye care and health professionals and philanthropic organizations. Lions club members also collect and recycle eyeglasses for distribution in developing countries year round. Lions work to improve the environment, support diabetes education, conduct hearing programs and provide disaster relief around the world through their foundation.

Our club provides 4 $1,000 scholarships annually to graduating Central students. And last year we created an additional scholarship geared towards technical school or licensing for a student looking to get into a trade upon graduating. If you know students, please encourage them to attend this informational night and our applications are available at the guidance office.

Last week the club was able to make an $8,000 donation the the Bread of Life food pantry to help combat area food insecurity. This project came about after an individual member expressed interest in having their required IRA distribution go to a charitable cause. The club was able to add enough funds to their generous donation to obtain a matching grant from the Lions of Virginia Foundation. This equalled what we hope is an impactful gift to combat hunger in our community! Pictured is VP Lion Steve handing off the donation.

It's that busy time of year again for your local Lions, as area clubs have been active in the community providing state required vision and hearing testing at all the county schools at no cost to the school system. Pictured below Lion Cindy and Lion Judy from Woodstock conduct hearing screenings with help from members of the Edinburg club.

At our last meeting it was an honor to recognize Lion David Hutton as a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest recognition given to a Lions member. If you follow our page you know our annual cash party is our largest fundraiser, and David has chaired this event taking on huge planning and behind the scenes duties for nearly 20 years running. He also serves on our golf tourny committee (our 2nd largest fund raiser) and is a former club president. Thank you Lion David for all you do to move the club forward serving our community and congratulations on this well deserved title!
