On August 21, 1879, in the village of Knock in County Mayo, Ireland, the villagers were witness to an extraordinary event at the local church. Described as a heavenly vision along the wall of the parish church surrounded by a white light, witnesses saw the Blessed Virgin Mary in prayer. Dressed in white, she wore a golden crown adorned with a golden rose. Along with Our Lady, her blessed spouse, Joseph, appeared with her to her right. On her left, John the Evangelist vested as a bishop with a mitre, held aloft an open book as he silently appeared to be preaching. Behind these three, stood an altar. Atop the altar stood a Lamb before a Cross. For two hours in the rain the witnesses stood in the presence of this apparition. Notably, Our Lady remained silent, in prayer, throughout the Apparition.

Knock remains a Pilgrimage sight - visited by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. Our Lady of Knock is recognized as the Patroness of Ireland.

Thank you to Saint Matthew Catholic Church for hosting us at the Ministry Fair. We met a lot of people and got to share about the work of the AOH and our Division.

Friendship. Unity. Christian Charity.

Those are the principles that guide our Fraternal Organization centered on our Irish, Catholic, and American identity.

Last night the Division met for the first time at St Matthew Catholic Church to experience those principles. Several new faces joined us to learn more about the division and the AOH.

We continued with fellowship nearby to partake in good craic, food, and preseason football. We have a lot of events in the works to both grow the Father Abram J. Ryan Division and better live out our Catholic faith. We have many opportunities for fellowship and service to our community, and we would love to have you with us.

Please join the Ancient Order of Hibernians - Fr Abram J Ryan Division 1 for our inaugural meeting at our new location- St Matthew Catholic Church.

After the meeting, we are going to head over to Rippy’s to watch some Titan’s preseason football.

The Diocese of Nashville was established by Pope Gregory XVI on July 28th, 1837 - with its boundaries encompassing all of the State of Tennessee. Prior to its establishment as a diocese, the Catholic faithful in Tennessee fell under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Bardstown and were served by a single priest.

The Irish community is deeply enmeshed with the origins of the Diocese. Years prior to the establishment of the Diocese and eventual installation of its first Bishop - Bishop Pius Miles - Irish workers built a Catholic Church near what would one day be the State Capitol Building. Holy Rosary Church would later become Holy Rosary Cathedral.

The Diocese of Nashville now has its twelfth Bishop - Bishop Spalding. While the geographic area has reduced, the Diocese has experienced growth from one Bishop traveling the span of the state to over 100 priests serving more 126,000 Catholics within the Diocese’s 60 churches (including parishes, missions, and stable faith communities).

Many of these parishes’ histories share a common history with Irish immigrants in Tennessee. May Christ’s Church continue to grow in Tennessee. And may its members never forget their roots.

St Patrick’s 172nd Irish Picnic in McEwen continues to bring together many Irish families for fellowship, fun, and fantastic BBQ.

Some of our division’s members make the trip every year so they can reunite with relatives. Others just love to get a bite and see the History of the Irish community in Tennessee.

If you are going this year and run into Steve, he will probably be able to tell you if you have any cousins there.

Members of the AOH are also members of their local parishes. The same is true in the Williamson County - Fr. Abram J. Ryan Division 1.

In keeping with the values of Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity, some of our members made it out to the St Matthew Catholic Church Parish Picnic - where our own Chaplain, Fr. Anthony Stewart, serves as Associate Pastor.
