From First Vice President Wesley Thompson

The unjust actions taken by the Colbert County Superintendent along with four members of the Colbert County School Board yet again exhibits that politics are unfortunately often placed above the best interests of those we as society are supposed to safeguard most, our young people. Students, parents, and community citizens across the Shoals have expressed their hurt, disappointment, and frustration. The expression of anguish is needed, but the exercise of action is needed even more. The decision by the Superintendent and four Board Members was further proof that we NEED more diverse representation (party, race, gender, etc…) in our elected offices. It was further proof that we NEED more people to run for elected office. It was further proof that voting in all elections do matter. It was further proof that if you don’t do politics, politics will do you.

The Shoals Democratic Club will host a special call-to-action meeting Thursday May 23rd at 7PM at the Sheffield IBEW (1803 E 17th Street) in response. This is an opportunity to turn expression into exercise. Like it or not, political engagement is required to elect officials who do what is in the best interests of the citizens that they represent, and who respect those who put them in office. Please attend this meeting, and bring as many people with you. Also, be sure to share this post. More information will come forth soon.

Please come out and let your voice be heard. The meeting will be at the Michael Recreation Center in Sheffield on Monday April 28th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Colbert County School System is still under a court order and is currently being reviewed by representatives from the Department of Justice. The challenge has been finding students, faculty, and staff who can share their stories. An attorney from the NAACP National office, and reps from the DOJ are meeting in reference to Colbert County and Sheffield City. The meeting will be held Monday, April 29 at 5:30p at the Michael Center. They want to meet with those persons who are willing to speak up about issues so now is the time to act. Please contact me at 256-381-1862 or email me at [email protected].
