Throughout history, artists have embraced new tools, from the invention of the camera to the rise of AI. Rather than replacing human creativity, AI can be a powerful assistant that helps you edit and optimize your original ideas.
Join artists Irene Carvajal and Gabriel Fernandez for an afternoon of traditional, hands-on gel plate printing. You will learn the fascinating process of image transfer and discover how AI can be a helpful add-on to your creative toolkit.

Irene Carvajal is a Costa Rican-American artist who works in the space where globalized culture meets local traditions. Her multidisciplinary practice, which includes printmaking, collage, video, performance, and installation, explores the social and economic weight of mass-produced objects. By submitting these everyday items to the physical pressures of the printing press or other artistic transformations, she unearths the historic, political, and cultural meaning embedded within them.
She has exhibited and participated in artist residencies in the United States, Japan, Mexico, and her native Costa Rica. A founding member of the We da Pepo artist collective, she is also a dedicated educator and a recipient of a 2022 California Arts Council Fellowship.
Gabriel Fernandez recently graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Computer Science. He has a keen interest in AI, including its applications and the profound philosophical and ethical questions it presents.
In addition to his work with programming and digital tools, he was a key assistant on a project with Irene that was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art of Costa Rica in February 2026.
