More than 10,000 children are currently in foster care in Michigan, and they’re entering the system scared, confused, and unprepared. Imagine arriving in a stranger’s home without pajamas, socks, a toothbrush, or even a single toy to hold onto. No child should have to start over without the basics. Yet this is the heartbreaking reality for so many. Macomb Foster Closet exists to change that—immediately. We provide urgently needed clothing, hygiene items, bedding, and comfort items to children entering foster care. Every donation—whether a gently used hoodie or a backpack full of essentials—helps restore dignity, warmth, and a sense of belonging in a moment of crisis. But we can’t do it without you. Today several board members from the Macomb Foster Closet spent the day volunteering with the amazing folks at the Downriver Foster Closet in Wyandotte at their big Halloween event 🎃 Over 300 people gathered for food, costumes, shopping, games, crafts, slime making, balloon animals, photo fun, bounce house, prizes, treats, pumpkins, and more 👻

We work hand in hand with nonprofit partners like the Downriver Foster Closet to care for all kids affected by foster care in Southeast Michigan. They volunteered at our Back To School Fest in August. We’ve been collaborating with them and sharing resources for many years now.

If you know of any downriver area churches, businesses, schools, or organizations looking for an excellent charity to support please refer them to the Downriver Foster Closet. They have recently launched their own forever home campaign to buy a building, and they certainly need more space to serve the volume of kids they do. They are all volunteers, like us, and do great work we can all be proud of 🧡 BE THE VILLAGE!

This included 17-19 year old teens from a local MCHS independent living facility for those aging out of foster care. We delivered 3 beds, mattresses, sheet sets, and pillows to a home in Detroit to help a sibling set of two brothers and their sister who aged out of foster care. Now they all have their own comfortable place to sleep 😴💤 We did this after receiving a call from our good partners at Big Family of Michigan. We love 💕 to collaborate for the kids, always putting them first.

Last night our building was filled with little ones picking out Halloween 🎃 costumes, trying them on, making new friends with other kids there, and running around pretending to be princesses and super heroes! Our volunteers were so excited to see these little angels, from different families, having so much fun together - just like all children should ❤️

On average, our volunteers do this for about 3-4 dozen youth every week all year round, not just at holidays or for special occasions, and for the full foster journey from birth to age 25….Helping Kids Begins Here at the Macomb Foster Closet!

We were busy yesterday with shoppers just like Trish & Thomas, pictured here, from Hazel Park. They unexpectedly were asked to take in a relative placement, making them one of our dedicated kinship foster families.

They not only picked out clothes, hygiene, blankets, food, and baby products, they also got a birthday party bag and presents to celebrate! We just received the largest donation from an individual in our history. An anonymous donor has generously invested $100,000 in the Macomb Foster Closet’s building and programs to provide children affected by foster care everything they need to thrive and feel cared for from birth until age 25 ❤️ Helping Kids Begins Here!

The donor indicated they had seen our work in action and believed in us to provide the most impactful direct services that these youth need. This amazing donation will fund the remainder of our critical interior facility renovations and provide for meeting the needs of emergency placements. Thank you for your truly transformational gift!

We all love the Detroit Lions 🦁 and this year Roary will be joining us at our annual Halloween Spooktacular on Saturday, October 24th 🎃 And we just happened to run into him today while collecting donations at the Ford House’s Harvest Fest!

This Macomb Foster Closet event is fun for the whole family, from the little ones all the way through the teens. We will have freshly grilled food, live musical entertainment, pumpkin painting and carving, pie and cake walks, spooky games, door prize raffle, contests with awesome prizes by age group for best costume and pumpkin, fun photo backdrops, creepy crafts, giveaways, and a trunk or treat 👻

DONORS: You, your family, friends, group, church, or business want to sponsor the event? Donate treat bags? Donate hay bales, pumpkins, donuts, c***r, food, or prizes for the kids? Text us at 586-422-0200 to get involved and help create a childhood experience for kids in need!

FOSTER FAMILIES: Register today at: macombfostercloset.org/halloween and remember to bring your qualifying foster care paperwork with you on the day of. No regular shopping will be available on the day of the party. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 11am, but must arrive no later 12:30pm, event at our facility ends at 2pm. Trunk or treat event is within walking distance inside the county parking garage and ends at 3pm.
