The cucumber plants at the NEEC gardens are loving this wet weather and are producing SO much fruit. Here they are, hiding under leaves, squeezing through fences, spreading far and wide. We are thrilled to be able to provide so much fresh, organic produce to the residents of The Montclair Inn , South End Gardens, and First Montclair House, as well as to clients at the Bloomfield Pantry at the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green , and Human Needs Food Pantry of Montclair, New Jersey .

Some of my happiest days with NEEC happen in our community gardens—on planting days, harvest days, and every moment when neighbors come together to grow food with purpose. Every Wednesday, we harvest fresh organic produce from our six community gardens in Montclair, Glen Ridge, and Passaic. Volunteers gather the harvest, bring it to a central location, clean and weigh the produce, and carefully document each garden’s productivity. For me, this process is more than recordkeeping; it is proof that our work is helping make premium organic food accessible to low-income residents. Each colorful vegetable reflects the dedication of our volunteers and the spirit behind our slogan: “We grow with love.”
Every Thursday, we deliver food to low-income seniors and residents with disabilities, then return to our gardens to harvest even more produce for Friday deliveries. This program nourishes families, strengthens community, and shows what is possible when people give their time, energy, and care. Mary Nubla is a clinical medical technologist living in Lincoln Park. She is also a full-time wife and a proud mother of three beautiful children—and one of NEEC's amazing volunteers.

Mary’s love for cooking and baking naturally piqued her interest in gardening. Growing up in Africa, her school taught her the value of self-sufficiency, including how to make soap and grow food. Additionally, traveling on medical missions with her father showed her firsthand the profound impact we can have on communities in need.

Not only is Mary a talented gardener, but she carries an entire tool chest in her car so she is ready for anything. When a tree fell recently at the Cooper Avenue garden, Mary came ready with a saw to dismantle the tree and pliers to repair the fence. When another volunteer discovered she had a flat tire, Mary was there to help.

“Throughout my life,” she says, “I have been blessed with mentors and experiences that shaped my values, and I love to teach anyone who wants that knowledge, especially my children. Living in service to help those in need while simultaneously protecting the environment is exactly why I chose to join NEEC. I am incredibly excited to contribute to the mission.” And we are incredibly excited to have Mary as part of the NEEC family.
