Northeast Earth Coalition

Northeast Earth Coalition We work at the community level to protect the environment, promote sustainability & food security.

We support community & environmental activists who give hope for a better future. To accomplish this we seek to bring together diverse environmental groups. We believe that a strong local food system contributes to the health of our entire community, and we will work to facilitate greater understanding of the social, economic, and environmental impacts of our food choices. We support small family

farms, urban farming projects, community vegetable gardens, and backyard food production. We believe in promoting a healthier society through education about and appreciation of local, fresh, sustainably raised produce and products. We see the growth of community vegetable gardens as an effective strategy to make healthy organic produce accessible to low income families, ensuring that all members of our community have access to fresh local foods. We promote energy conservation and the integration of renewable, sustainable energy into local communities through advising local organizations and individuals, demanding better energy policies, and participating in local energy projects. We support the promotion of sustainable eco-friendly transportation, including biking, walking, and the development of accessible, reliable, and affordable public transportation. We envision a region where people can coexist and prosper in harmony with their environment. To this end, we promote the preservation and restoration of the natural environment.

Great news--the Green Acres bill (S3254), which prohibits the Green Acres Program from spending money on Artificial Turf, is up for a vote in the Senate Environment Committee this Monday, June 8th at 10am.

This legislation is essential for protecting the health of our communities and environment. It will ensure that Green Acres funds are dedicated to conservation and safe recreation, not as a subsidy for toxic artificial turf.

This bill is the culmination of years of hard work and activism. We need your help as we get closer to the finish line with this bill--please fill out our action alert, or send a letter to the members of the Senate Energy and Environment Committee to vote YES on this bill!

A team of volunteers from Bright Horizons helped us do some serious weeding at the Cooper Ave. garden Wednesday afternoon. Invasive garlic mustard, mugwort, burdock, and so many other nasties were threatening to take over, but not anymore! A huge thanks to them for their marvelous work.

The NEEC community garden at the First Congregational church in Montclair is hidden in plain sight -- right outside the main entrance, it is nevertheless beautifully tucked away. Today, Avani, Lorraine, Mary, and Jon helped plant collared greens and kale, and tidied up the beds. This is such an enchanting garden, in the heart of downtown. Stop by and see what's growing. It's a fun mix of veggies and perennial pollinator plants. 40 South Fullerton Ave.

This past rainy weekend was not great for picnics and parades but, boy, did the gardens enjoy it. At Ridge Congregational Church , the peas are starting to take off.

Today, we planted swiss chard, butternut squash, pole beans, and more cucumbers. We spotted a lacewing, which is a wonderful insect known for its voracious appetite for aphids. A happy addition to the garden!

Thanks to Avani, Lorraine, Mary, and Nancy for their help!
