What an incredible honor it was to be invited this morning to witness Governor Mikie Sherrill sign bill S2260 into law. Thank you, Transgender Rights Coalition of New Jersey, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey, Garden State Equality, Louise Walpin, and everyone who played a role in working to get this passed. Thank you to Senator Teresa Ruiz, Luanne Peterpaul, trans advocate Kraus, Assemblywoman Speight, and PPNJ President Rogers Collins.
This important legislation strengthens protections for people seeking reproductive and gender-affirming health care, as well as the providers, staff, and volunteers who make that care possible. For our transgender and gender-diverse community in particular, the law creates stronger protections against intimidation, threats, obstruction, harassment, property damage, and other attempts to interfere with access to gender-affirming health services.
At a time when women and transgender people and their families are facing increasing barriers to care in many parts of the country, it was deeply meaningful to witness New Jersey take this important step to protect access to care, bodily autonomy, dignity, safety, and the right of people to make their own health care decisions.
We are incredibly grateful to have been present for this historic moment and proud to see New Jersey continuing to stand up for the rights and well-being of women and our LGBTQIA+ community, and to be part of the Transgender Rights Coalition.
