Have You Ever Heard of “The Sea” on the Pike County/Meriwether County, Georgia line?

Tucked away along the Flint River near the White Oak Creek area, close to Gay, Georgia, is a place known to longtime locals as “The Sea.” The Sea is a wide, circular place on the Flint River, measured to be 35 ft deep. It has “stories.”

It’s one of those fascinating places whose name has been passed down through generations, yet its history and the origin of its unusual name remain something of a mystery.

The Flint River is rich in local history, and places like “The Sea” are part of the heritage we don’t want to lose.

Do you remember “The Sea”? Did you ever swim, fish, picnic, or spend time there? We’d love to hear your memories, old stories, and especially how this special place got its name!

Pike Historic Preservation is making application for the site of the Pike County Consolidated High School in Concord for the site to be placed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places. The property is now owned by Old Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.

Additional historic photos of the school and gym are needed for the application. If you have photos from the 1950’s and 1960’s, please e-mail to [email protected]

We believe in restoring the rich history of Pike County that inspire and connect present and future generations. Each year, PHP selects a building or site in Pike County to make application to the U.S. Department of the Interior to have the building/site placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets for the 50/50 Raffle to benefit historic preservation in Pike County. Julie Smith bought the winning ticket and won $1,037. Julie, generously, donated her winnings back to PHP. Thank you, Julie, because of such generous supporters, PHP made $2080 on the raffle.
