Dog-Harmony programs provide evidence-based information related to human interactions with dogs, and especially the care and well-being of these amazing animals. Understanding and empathy is the result of humane education and this significantly reduces the likelihood that a dog will be abandoned or surrendered to a shelter.

Did you know Dog-Harmony provided 279 hours of literacy advancement and educational enrichment through July 2026?

Those hours represent more than one program. They reflect Dog-Harmony’s work across Northwest Florida through R.E.A.D.ing Paws, humane education, therapy dog programs, and community-based learning opportunities.

Our programs serve children, families, schools, libraries, healthcare partners, and community organizations, using education and the human-animal bond to build confidence, encourage safer interactions with dogs, strengthen literacy, and support healthier relationships between people and their pets.

Providing these programs requires trained therapy dog teams, educational materials, volunteer coordination, program development, and ongoing community outreach.

Did you know? In just the first half of 2026, Dog-Harmony provided 994 hours of service and support across Northwest Florida. 🐾

Those hours represent the work behind therapy dog visits, humane education, literacy programs, volunteer support, and community outreach.

They also represent something bigger: children building confidence, patients receiving comfort, families getting support, and therapy dog teams being prepared to serve safely and effectively.

A therapy dog visit starts long before a dog walks through the door. 🐾

Dog-Harmony evaluates each dog-and-handler team, provides training and safety guidance, carefully matches teams with the right setting, coordinates visits with facilities, and provides ongoing support to help every visit remain safe and successful.

That behind-the-scenes work is what helps qualified therapy dog teams serve children, patients, families, schools, libraries, healthcare facilities, and community organizations across Northwest Florida.

The dogs and handlers volunteer their time, but the program infrastructure that prepares and supports them still requires funding.

For some children, reading aloud can feel intimidating. R.E.A.D.ing Paws gives them a calmer way to practice. 🐾📚

Through Dog-Harmony’s R.E.A.D.ing Paws program, children read aloud to certified therapy dogs in a supportive, judgment-free environment designed to build confidence, fluency, and a more positive connection with reading.

As one local teacher shared, the program helped a student become more confident and successful in reading.

These sessions are made possible by trained therapy dog teams, volunteers, community partners, and the support of donors who help keep programs like this available to children across Northwest Florida.

It helps turn a qualified dog-and-handler team into a prepared, supported therapy dog team serving children, patients, families, schools, libraries, healthcare facilities and community organizations across Northwest Florida.

Before a therapy dog ever walks into a hospital room, classroom or library, there is important work happening behind the scenes.

Your gift helps support team evaluations, volunteer preparation, facility coordination, safety procedures, ongoing guidance, visit logistics and the individualized placement of each therapy dog team.

Our Children’s Humane Education program teaches children how to interact with dogs safely, calmly, and respectfully. 🐾📚

During these guided sessions, children learn how to:

🐶 Recognize basic canine body language

💙 Approach dogs calmly

✋ Use gentle hands

👀 Notice when a dog may need space

🏠 Practice responsible pet care

These lessons help protect both children and dogs by reducing unsafe interactions and preventing avoidable incidents.

Humane education also helps children build empathy, confidence, and a better understanding of how dogs communicate.

Smiles, comfort, and a little extra courage. 🐾🦷

On July 31, Dog-Harmony therapy dog teams joined the Give a Kid a Smile event at Hammock Bay Dental, co-hosted by the Children’s Volunteer Health Network.

The dogs helped ease anxiety for children receiving dental care while also bringing calm and comfort to staff and volunteers.
