Interfaith Reflection: Life Beyond the Grave
In this passage, we hear the story of Lazarus—one who had died, yet was called back to life by Jesus. The words echo across traditions: even when all hope seems lost, renewal is possible.
For Christians, the raising of Lazarus reminds us that love and divine power reach beyond the grave. For our Jewish siblings, it resonates with the psalms that proclaim God’s steadfast love and faithfulness through every trial. For Muslims, it calls to mind Allah’s mercy and the promise of resurrection and justice on the Last Day. In Buddhism and Hinduism, we hear in it the deeper truth that life is never fully extinguished—there is always transformation, always continuation.
The tears of Jesus in this story are just as important as the miracle. He wept with Mary and Martha, showing us that the Divine does not stand apart from our grief, but enters into it. Compassion is the bridge that unites all faiths: the call to sit with the suffering, to walk with the grieving, to lift the fallen.
So may this story remind us: when the stone seems too heavy to roll away, hope still breathes. When despair has sealed the tomb, love calls us out. And in every tradition, we are taught that light is never overcome by darkness.
