I want to speak clearly to our community about something important.
Please take the time to watch and listen to the ten newly archived interviews and audio recordings of Elaine Gottschall on the Breaking the Vicious Cycle website. Her own words address two areas that have been misunderstood for many years.
First, Elaine taught that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet works to heal inflammation. She never described it as a cure for Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Many people experience deep healing and even clean biopsy reports, yet the underlying tendency toward disease can still exist. Symptom control is possible for many, and for some the inflammation truly resolves, but this is not the same as a universal cure.
Second, Elaine never said the diet should replace medication. She spoke often about the diet working alongside medication when medication is needed. Treatment is personal. Some people need medicine, some need surgery, some rely primarily on the diet, and many use a combination of all three.
We also know from science that IBD can arise from different paths: environmental influences, clinically induced factors, and genetic disposition. Because of this, not everyone carries the same form of Crohn’s or colitis, and a diagnosis can change over time as research uncovers new root causes.
When someone says the diet did not work for them, we must listen with compassion. We do not walk in their shoes. The SCD is powerful, but it is not an end-all answer, and no medication is an end-all answer either. Even surgery or an ostomy does not always remove disease completely.
I encourage every person here to hear Elaine directly. Her interviews remind us that the diet is a tool to reduce inflammation, support healing, and improve quality of life, not a replacement for necessary medical care. Her voice still guides us with balance, humility, and hope.
