History of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) & Does It Still Make Sense Today?

In this presentation, Raman Prasad shares his personal journey with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet alongside an overview of the history and evolution of the SCD. Drawing from more than 30 years of experience following the diet, he explores how SCD emerged, why it resonated with early adopters, and whether it remains relevant for individuals being diagnosed today.

I want to speak clearly to our community about something important.

Please take the time to watch and listen to the ten newly archived interviews and audio recordings of Elaine Gottschall on the Breaking the Vicious Cycle website. Her own words address two areas that have been misunderstood for many years.

First, Elaine taught that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet works to heal inflammation. She never described it as a cure for Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Many people experience deep healing and even clean biopsy reports, yet the underlying tendency toward disease can still exist. Symptom control is possible for many, and for some the inflammation truly resolves, but this is not the same as a universal cure.

Second, Elaine never said the diet should replace medication. She spoke often about the diet working alongside medication when medication is needed. Treatment is personal. Some people need medicine, some need surgery, some rely primarily on the diet, and many use a combination of all three.

We also know from science that IBD can arise from different paths: environmental influences, clinically induced factors, and genetic disposition. Because of this, not everyone carries the same form of Crohn’s or colitis, and a diagnosis can change over time as research uncovers new root causes.

When someone says the diet did not work for them, we must listen with compassion. We do not walk in their shoes. The SCD is powerful, but it is not an end-all answer, and no medication is an end-all answer either. Even surgery or an ostomy does not always remove disease completely.

I encourage every person here to hear Elaine directly. Her interviews remind us that the diet is a tool to reduce inflammation, support healing, and improve quality of life, not a replacement for necessary medical care. Her voice still guides us with balance, humility, and hope.

Dawn Thorpe Sabean, a 2023 SCDROCKS presenter, is creating a new business designed to serve the Specific Carbohydrate Diet community. She is seeking input to better understand the needs of those following SCD, especially women focused on strength, energy, and reducing inflammation through movement and nutrition.

If it fits for you, please take a few moments to respond to her survey and help shape resources that may benefit others on this journey. Thank you for supporting community-driven ideas that lift and support us all.

The SCDA shares this as a community announcement and not as a clinical endorsement.

Dr. Dale Lee, MD, presents “Reverse Engineering Exclusive Enteral Nutrition for Crohn’s Disease: New Insights on Dietary Therapy”, hosted by the Specific Carbohydrate Diet Association (SCDA). In this clinically focused presentation, Dr. Lee explores Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (EEN) for Crohn’s disease and introduces Reverse Engineering Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (RE-EEN)—a whole-food–based dietary approach grounded in the principles of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD).

RE-EEN involves the development of a whole-food smoothie designed to be comparable in macronutrient and micronutrient composition to traditional EEN formulas used in Crohn’s disease, while utilizing real foods consistent with SCD principles. This approach offers new insights into how dietary therapy may be structured using food as medicine rather than relying solely on commercial formulas.

The final research results on RE-EEN and formula composition have been published and are available here:
