Middle River, MD 21220 Marshy Point Nature Center, a Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks facility in Maryland, is a pristine waterfront nature center on the Chesapeake Bay. The center is located at the county's Marshy Point Park which, in combination with adjacent state and federal land, is part of a natural preserve encompassing more than 3,000 acres. The park features over three miles of hiking trails, two self-guided nature trails, a canoe launch and pier, a wildlife observation platform, and a butterfly garden. Marshy Point Nature Center provides a variety of enjoyable and educational programs for visitors of all ages. “The butterfly house is still awake. The monarchs are coming out of chrysalis and we still have a few black swallowtail caterpillars still feeding. This time of year the caterpillars are more black than green because they are trying to absorb the suns rays to stay warm.”

October 1st today vs October 1st in 1794…remembering Cassandra. Flowers have been left again by someone at the burial site.

“From decayed rubble to the revival of lives untold, a restored 18th Century headstone marks a site that now represents all who lived at Marshy Point.”

There is an 18th century burial ground at Marshy Point. The only engraved headstone stone reads "In Memory of Cassandor Hamilton/Who Departed this Life/October 1ſt 1794/Aged 42 Years.” The long “s” of the time was inscribed for the first of October. Each year, flowers have been laid by someone on the anniversary of death to remember the person. - See image.

Her maiden name was Cassandra Bond and she was born November 7th, 1749. She inherited around 100 acres from her father at Marshy Point when he passed. The site is located near the boarder of a 1745 land patent called Midsummer Hills. Glancing at the gentle slopes, one can imagine this name’s origin.

In the burial site, it is estimated to contain 17 probable and 9 possible grave shafts according to a 2020 Ground Penetrating Radar Survey completed by the Maryland Historical Trust’s Office of Archaeology. Unfortunately, we do not know who the other grave shafts belong to, and may never know except from deductions of those living on the property near the ending of their lives.

Feel free to visit and be respectful of this burial area along the Cassandra Hamilton Trail (Yellow Trail).

Volunteer Training Opportunities for New and Returning Volunteers:

Last minute reminder, this is still open with Rec and Parks!

Locations: Marshy Point and Cromwell Valley Parks
Ages 18+. Join us for volunteer training!

Participants will meet at a different park sites, learn a variety of natural, historical and interpretive topics and discover the ways to volunteer at the site from the BCRP Park Naturalists.

Training schedule:
Wednesday, September 23: Cromwell Valley Park

Thursday, September 24: Marshy Point Park

Friday, September 25: Field Trip to Fort Garrison

$6 for new volunteers; free for returning volunteers.

Firstly, we have a special thank you to all who visited the History and Archaeology Table to feed our local Mosquito population 🦟 yesterday. Bob, the head mosquito, was overjoyed in the donations. Those who were escorted to the cemetery by the Culicidae family know firsthand this other marsh mascot that isn’t a cute duck.

The Marshy Point Nature Center Council would like to thank the county staff, volunteers, vendors, musicians, and all visitors who make these festivals a success. Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks allows the joining of our community in the preserved green space from Baltimore County Government so we all may partake in its beauty.

Each festival, we hope you also keep in mind the gratitude we should show to our animal ambassadors overseen by the park as well as the wild animals who are impacted by our presence at their home.

We look forward to all of our upcoming events.

Tomorrow!!! Be sure to come for our Second Sunday Bird Walks! 8 am - 11:30 am. It is Free. This starts an hour earlier as it is migration time. Don’t make it a “solitary” time and bring a few friends.

Join a few knowledgeable council members who know what certain birds look like that live or pass by Marshy Point. They also have cosponsored walks with the nature center staff and Baltimore Bird Club.

Join them every Second Sunday year round. Walks typically last until around 11:30 am and are free as well as open to everyone! Meet on the back deck of the nature center. Stay as long as you like. You can sign up on CivicRec or just show up and they will take care of it.
