Public Meeting to Discuss if Eau Claire County Should Pursue an AI Data Center Moratorium

The Committee on Administration is meeting Tuesday, September 8th at 9am to discuss whether or not Eau Claire County should pursue a moratorium on hyper-scale AI Data Centers.

This meeting is open to the public. We’re working to get the word out to people who are moved to make a statement.

This is not the meeting of the full Board, but it IS when they will decide if the moratorium will move forward... or not. We need people to show up to politely explain why this issue matters to them. If you're someone who cares, we hope to see you there.

Barron County Data Center Moratorium Being Considered!!

I've included a link to the packet the board has been provided. It has excellent resources. I encourage you to read it. It includes the actual moratorium ordinance they are considering, as well as moratoriums and regulations passed by other communities. Additionally there are some toolkits in there that give supervisors a head start in learning about how to regulate data centers.

It is not clear whether there will be an opportunity for public comment. I would encourage you to reach out to your county supervisors between now and Monday at noon via email or phone message to let them know you want them to vote to adopt.

The ordinance that they've written is one of the better written ones that I've seen. They've been very thorough and careful to ensure that it is legally sound.

This moratorium ONLY applies to the unincorporated towns that have adopted county zoning. It does NOT apply to any city or village, or any self-zoned or unzoned unincorporated towns.

For those who've never read one, the language can feel to some like they are preparing to bring in a data center. Rest assured that is not what this is.

A county is not permitted to simply ban a land use. Lnguage that would imply a band could invite a legal challenge. Moratoriums are a tool to allow a local government time to craft zoning ordinances to protect land and resources, without the pressure of having to worry about potential approaches in the meantime.
