NEW SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORTS FUTURE NURSES

Jerry and Debbie Wick of Menomonee Falls established the Wick Nursing Scholarship this year. In this column Debbie explains their decision to support nursing students.

I was five years old when I decided I wanted to be a nurse after having a vision of an Angel of Mercy in my mind.

At that time there was not a lot of help in the education system to evaluate your strengths and desires in choosing a career path, especially for females.

When I went to school at Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing at 17, I was unprepared for reality.

After graduating from nursing school, I spent 18 years in various fields of nursing, and my favorite department was Labor & Delivery because I was drawn to babies. During that time, we also started a family and work-life balance was a challenge because nursing is a demanding career.

As I left nursing, I was also frustrated and dismayed at the lack of emphasis on quality patient care. I returned to school, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, and pursued other career paths.

Over the years, I saw the education of nurses change into a science and discipline of patient-centered care. It was a much needed and welcomed transition.

During the last two decades, Jerry and I have been in situations where our health was at serious risk, and we needed care from doctors, nurses, therapists, clinicians, and health care professionals committed to patients.

We’ve received top-notch care at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital on many occasions and in various departments -- from cancer to heart and vascular to orthopedics. Because we have an outstanding hospital associated with an academic medical center, we think this is standard. Unfortunately, not all hospitals provide care at such an exceptional level.

Since 2005, we’ve become very involved with Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital Foundation, and we’re impressed with how this nonprofit supports the hospital and community. The impact of donor generosity is seen across the hospital.

After retiring from our business earlier this year, we decided to sponsor an annual scholarship through the foundation.

Recognizing the demand for nurses, we wanted to specifically target young adults who may have started in one direction and then switched to nursing.

Thanks to the generosity of donors to the Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital Foundation, individuals seeking behavioral health support are now welcomed into a modern, expanded therapeutic space designed to promote healing, privacy, and safety.

The new Community Recovery Center (CRC) location at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital, provides secure, thoughtfully designed meeting areas, including private rooms for individual and small group counseling.

The CRC is home to both a Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program and a Substance Use Disorder Intensive Outpatient Program, ensuring individuals can access the level of care they need close to home.

In 2025, the Community Recovery Center provided 2,500 behavioral health services — more than double the 1,173 services delivered in 2024, representing a 113 percent increase year over year.

The team plans to further expand mental health services, building on the additional capacity made possible by the new therapeutic space.

“The new space not only increases access to behavioral health care but also strengthens support for our community by providing a safe, healing environment for patients and staff,” said Rebecca Frank, behavioral health manager. “These investments demonstrate our commitment to expanding outpatient services and improving the well-being of those we serve.”

Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital Foundation recently allocated funds to the Modified Care Unit 3 for a movable stand up scale.

The 29-bed unit specializes in the care of cardiac patients, including individuals with heart failure, acute stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other conditions requiring a higher level of care.

Daily patient weights are a critical component of monitoring and directly influence the patient’s care plan and treatment decisions.

The unit has one scale and now with support from the foundation, the second scale will allow team members to complete daily weights more efficiently, prevent delays in care and create a safe environment.

The foundation raises funds for the hospital through donors, grateful patients, corporate sponsors, and team members. These funds are directed to hospital departments to enhance patient care and comfort with new equipment, programs and technology.

Foundation funds also help cover some construction costs to renovate and remodel spaces within the hospital.

Healing Garden Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Thank you to the donors, volunteers and friends who have helped keep the Healing Garden at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital blooming the last two decades.

Tucked away off Parking Lot A in the southwest corner of the campus, the oasis is a favorite for patients and team members, who frequent the grounds in search of calm, serene surroundings to step back and relax.

“We know our hospital delivers outstanding medical care and provides an exceptional patient care experience, but healing extends beyond medicine alone. The garden serves as a reminder that healing can also be found in nature … and in quiet moments of comfort and reflection,” said Ann Johnson, the foundation’s associate vice president. “Over the last 20 years, countless footsteps have traveled the garden pathways and countless conversations have taken place on the garden benches. While we may never know the personal meaning behind each engraved garden stone, tile or bench, we do know this space has touched thousands of lives.”

In the early 2000s, a group of visionaries recognized the need for a Healing Garden at our hospital including Mrs. Pamela Parker, the hospital’s former chief operating officer, and the late Jim Fass, who was the grounds department manager at the hospital for over 30 years.

With the support of the foundation, the hospital, and a dedicated group of Master Gardeners, the Healing Garden was born.

Construction commenced in Fall 2004, and the Healing Garden was officially dedicated on June 21, 2006, with a theme of “Giving Hope a Place to Grow.”

Personalized tiles and pavers in honor of or in memory of family members and loved ones are featured in the walkways and around the “Doves Taking to Flight” sculpture centered in the fountain.

Benches and stones dedicated to loved ones and friends of the hospital and foundation are enjoyable to read.

The garden's continued vitality is made possible through the care and dedication of thoughtful and talented individuals of Master Gardeners, volunteers, and team members from the hospital’s Facility Services. Their tireless hours of planning, planting, weeding, watering, and nurturing ensure that the Healing Garden remains a source of inspiration and beauty year-round. These are also the experts who can answer questions about the wide variety of plants, flowers, and trees in the garden.

In recent years, the garden expanded to include a grassy area above the original garden, a major overhaul of the fountain, replanting of flowers and the addition of a new Healing Garden sign at the base of the stairs in the lower garden.

Few hospitals are fortunate enough to offer an outdoor space as wonderful as our Healing Garden. Together, through volunteer service and philanthropic support, the Healing Garden continues to flourish for all who visit.

In addition to personalized mementos, monetary contributions of any size are appreciated to support the care and maintenance of the Healing Garden.

Happy 62nd Anniversary to our wonderful hospital in Menomonee Falls.

Each year we thank the residents who lived in and around Menomonee Falls who raised funds by selling bonds to build a hospital close to their community.

On July 1, 1964, their dreams were fulfilled as Community Memorial Hospital opened its doors.

Named in honor of residents who served in World War II, the “hospital on the hill” started caring for patients with just 16 physicians and 70 staff members.

Today, as part of Froedtert ThedaCare Health, Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital provides medical care to patients with about 1,500 team members.

We continue to look ahead, work hard and find the best ways to support the medical needs of our patients, their families and the communities we serve.

The third Monday in June is always a treat for golfers who participate in Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital Foundation’s annual Golf Classic at North Hills Country Club in Menomonee Falls.

Golf enthusiasts spent the day on the greens while raising money for the foundation’s Scholarship Program.

Longtime Golf Classic presenting sponsor and committed supporter Weas Development once again helped make the day special for golfers.

Over the last 27 years, the golf event has generated nearly $1.8 million in proceeds, supporting many departments across the hospital with new equipment and technology to enhance patient care.

Congratulations to the 28 students who received scholarships from Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital Foundation for the 2026-2027 academic year.

This year the foundation allocated $107,605 to the Scholarship Program, once again fulfilling a commitment to invest in future health care professionals.

In addition, the foundation awards named scholarships which are established by donors who want a special way to honor family members and encourage future professionals.

All scholars are health science and health care majors at universities and colleges and pursuing associate, bachelor's, master's, doctorate and medical degrees.

Recipients are recent high school graduates, college and university students and current hospital team members expanding their knowledge for their jobs and leadership opportunities.

Demand for healthcare professionals in the coming decades is expected to be high globally and in the United States, driven by aging populations, chronic disease and workforce shortages.

The hospital and foundation have distributed scholarships to local students and hospital staff members since 1970, awarding more than $1.6 million to nearly 600 recipients.

A new point-of-care ultrasound machine to support the Vascular Surgery team at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital was unveiled earlier this month.

A longtime and generous donor to Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital Foundation provided a significant portion of funding for the new GE Logiq machine.

The equipment, which totals nearly $50,000, will be used directly by the vascular team to perform real time imaging in both inpatient and outpatient settings, expediting evaluation and treatment for patients with conditions such as peripheral arterial disease, carotid stenosis, venous insufficiency and end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.

The foundation is proud to help fund equipment and technology that improves patient access to high-quality vascular imaging, provide efficient and timely diagnoses and enhance patient care and comfort.
