Up next is Liam Brandon!

Tell us about you?

My name is Liam Brandon, and I am 11 years old. I have been livestock judging for two years on the Polk county 4-H livestock judging team. I also enjoy showing sheep and spending time with my growing Dorper flock.

What do you like most about livestock judging?

Livestock judging has really helped bring me out of my shell. It has helped to grow my confidence. I especially enjoy the challenges and competition.

What is your favorite species to judge or talk?

My favorite species to judge and talk is cattle, especially steers. They are my favorite. I can see their differences clearly and sort them based on the skills I have learned. I am most confident in explaining how I see them as they stand in the class.

Coach’s comment: Liam was the biggest surprise last year. He had a top 10 individual finish at his very first livestock judging contest. That trend of solid placings and good reasons continued. He is beyond his years in his ability to accurately describe livestock in reasons. He has the competitiveness and work ethic that I like to have on the team! - JH

Lets hear from Koleman!

Tell us about you?

My name is Koleman Goodnight. I am 12 years old and the son of Justin and Gretchen Goodnight. I’m a student at Mena Middle School. I enjoy all things outdoors and livestock. This is my 3rd year on the Polk Co 4H Livestock Judging team.

What do you like most about Livestock Judging?

What I like most about judging is the challenge, the team aspect, winning, and most of all learning new things.

What is your favorite species to Judge?

Cattle is my favorite species. They are the biggest, there are so many different breeds and each one can bring a different challenge to judge in a class.

Coach’s comment: Every livestock judging team has someone who lightens the mood and gives everyone a smile. That’s our Koleman. He’s commonly the very first to practice and always helps get the room prepared for others. He just had his first top 10 overall finish at a competitive contest! We’re super proud of him and anticipate he will continue to make a big jump this year! - JH

We’re going to start highlighting our younger team members! Next up is Dusty Horton

Tell us about you?

My name is Dusty Horton and I am eleven years old. This is my third year judging on the Polk County Livestock Judging Team.

What do you like the most about livestock judging?

Livestock judging has helped teach me how to be more confident and less shy. I have learned a lot about how to choose my own show animals since I have joined livestock judging. I also enjoy traveling to all of the competitions.

What is your favorite species to judge or talk?

My favorite species to judge is cattle. I like sorting through them best. I don’t show cattle, but I do like to watch them on the move.

Coach’s comment: Dusty started with me at such a young age and has never backed down. He always shows up. He is polite, respectful and has work ethic. He just had a top 3 individual finish at our last contest and he helped his team win the contest for his division. We’re super proud of him and anticipate he will make a big jump this year! - JH

What is your favorite memory from your livestock judging experiences?

My favorite livestock judging memory dates back to third grade. When my 4H leader suggested that my friend and I try out the livestock judging contest. It was an unforgettable experience filled with fun and excitement. That moment sparked my passion for the industry and set me on the path to pursue livestock judging. Although I didn't win that day, the lasting memories I made left a positive impression and have kept my interest in livestock judging alive ever since.

Coach’s comment: Kimber comes from a background that definitely knows livestock. She is doing a great job so far this year with reasons and I proud of the work she has put forth. She has the personal character traits that will result in a bright future! - JH
