By sharing their time, knowledge, and love of reading, Shelia and Al are helping inspire the next generation of readers and leaders. Their commitment reminds us that sometimes the greatest impact comes from simply showing up, opening a book, and encouraging a child to believe in their potential. ❤️

🌟 Greatness Starts With Our Students! 🌟

The Rotary Club of Memphis was proud to welcome Dr. Roderick Richmond, Superintendent of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), as our guest speaker!

Dr. Richmond shared his vision and mission for serving more than 105,000 students and nearly 14,000 employees across the district—an incredible responsibility that requires strong leadership, collaboration, and the ability to manage one of the city’s largest and most complex logistical systems.

We were inspired to hear about the progress being made throughout MSCS, including encouraging improvements in student attendance. The district’s chronic absenteeism rate has moved below 30% for the first time, representing an important milestone in the effort to ensure students are in school, engaged, and ready to learn.

🎓 College opportunities are expanding, too. Through partnerships with Southwest Tennessee Community College, MSCS students have opportunities to participate in dual-enrollment courses, allowing them to earn college credit while still in high school and take meaningful steps toward their future.

At the center of this work is the district’s Pathway to Greatness, built around the Five A’s:

🎨 Arts

This holistic approach recognizes that preparing young people for success means developing the whole student—academically, personally, creatively, and beyond.

🌟 Great conversation at the Rotary Club of Memphis!

We were pleased to welcome Brady Walkinshaw, founder and CEO of Noisy Creek, as our guest speaker.

Brady shared his journey from Seattle, where he purchased the local newspaper The Stranger and built a ticketing venue, to his recent acquisition of Contemporary Media, including the Memphis Flyer and Memphis Magazine.

📰 His mission? Bring local journalism back to communities and help strengthen the connections that make our cities vibrant and informed.

We’re grateful to Brady for sharing his story and vision with our Rotary members!

The Rotary Club of Memphis was proud to host our Mobile Food Pantry this Saturday in partnership with St. Patrick Community Outreach and the Mid-South Food Bank. Together, we helped provide food and support to hundreds of families in our community. 🙌🏽🥫
A very special thank you to our District Governor, Stephanie Crisp, for joining us and showing her support for this important and meaningful service project. Your presence and commitment to serving others mean so much to us!
We also want to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to every volunteer who showed up and gave their time, energy, and heart to make this event a success. ❤️ Your willingness to serve helped make a difference for hundreds of families.

❤️ There’s Always Room for More Helping Hands! ❤️

The Rotary Club of Memphis is proud to be part of a powerful community effort that helps provide food and hope to hundreds of Memphis-area families each month.
Our Mobile Food Pantry is held in partnership with St. Patrick Community Outreach Center and the Mid-South Food Bank, bringing volunteers together to serve families in need.

A special thank-you goes to Rotarian and WMC-TV anchor Joe Birch, whose outstanding leadership and commitment have helped make this monthly effort a success. Joe helped establish the contactless mobile pantry during the COVID-19 pandemic, and today, approximately 400–450 cars come through the pantry each month. What an incredible example of the Rotary spirit of service! ❤️

There is always room for more helping hands! Volunteers can help pack food boxes, load groceries into vehicles and assist with the distribution process. ❤️ Serving Our Community, One Family at a Time! ❤️

The Rotary Club of Memphis Mobile Food Pantry will be held this Saturday, September 26, at 8:30 AM, in partnership with St. Patrick Community Outreach and the Mid-South Food Bank.

Each month, this wonderful community effort helps provide food assistance to hundreds of families in our community who are facing food insecurity. We are grateful for everyone who comes together to make this important outreach possible!

A special thank-you goes to Joe Birch for his outstanding leadership and dedication in spearheading the Mobile Food Pantry each month. Joe does a fantastic job coordinating this effort and helping ensure that families receive the food and support they need. His commitment to serving our community truly makes a difference! 👏❤️

We were honored to welcome Dr. Stephen Threlkeld, a leading infectious disease physician, as a guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Memphis.

Dr. Threlkeld brought his extensive experience in infectious disease care to an engaging and informative conversation about simple steps individuals can take to protect their health and prevent illness. A graduate of Rhodes College and the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Dr. Threlkeld completed postgraduate training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. He serves as Medical Director of Infectious Diseases for Baptist Memorial Health Care and is a managing member of Threlkeld Infectious Disease.

His presentation highlighted five important areas for all of us to consider:

💉 Get your flu shot each year and stay current on recommended vaccinations.

🍽️ Prepare food safely to help prevent foodborne illnesses.

🩺 Stay up to date on measles vaccination, particularly as measles remains a highly contagious and preventable disease.

🕷️ Be mindful of tick bites and take appropriate precautions when spending time outdoors.

✈️ Plan ahead when traveling internationally and make sure you have the appropriate vaccinations and health precautions for your destination.

We are grateful to Dr. Threlkeld for sharing his knowledge and reminding us that informed, everyday choices can play an important role in protecting ourselves, our families and our communities.
