🚨 Stray Dogs & Cats Are Flooding Into the Facility — Community Help Is Urgently Needed

The facility is currently experiencing a major influx of stray dogs and cats, and kennel space is reaching critical limits. Most people don’t realize that once an animal enters an animal control facility, it is seldom reclaimed, even when the animal clearly has an owner.

Every unclaimed dog or cat occupies a kennel that another animal in crisis urgently needs. When owned animals are not picked up, it becomes significantly harder for the facility to take in emergency cases, cruelty cases, and truly homeless strays.

🐾 Why reclaiming matters right now
- Kennel space is limited — Every occupied kennel reduces the facility’s ability to respond to new emergencies.
- Shelter environments are stressful — Stray animals are scared and overwhelmed; reclaiming quickly reduces their stress.
- Faster reunions open space — Prompt reclaiming allows the facility to help the next animal in need.
- Community involvement saves lives — Identifying or reclaiming a stray directly impacts the facility’s ability to operate safely and effectively.

📣 If you recognize ANY of the current stray animals:
- Provide any identifying information
- Share their photos with neighbors and local groups
- Contact the facility manager immediately

📲 Text or call the Facility Manager at 757‑709‑8103 with any information regarding a stray dog or cat currently housed at the facility.

☀️🐾 As the weather warms up, please be mindful of your pets.
Heat stroke can happen very quickly, even on days that don’t feel extreme. Heavy panting, drooling, wobbling, or sudden weakness are all signs of danger.

Keep pets indoors during peak heat, provide shade and fresh water, and never leave them in a vehicle — not even for a moment.

If you see an animal in distress, you must call the Sheriff’s Office to report it.
Calling the proper authorities can save a life.

🆘🐾 Friends of Animal Control — Urgent Senior Plea 🐾🆘

- Two Seniors in Desperate Need — 🐶🐶💔
These two Shar Pei–Pitbull mixes were originally thought to be around 6, but we now believe they are closer to 10–13 years old. Both are heartworm positive, and while the shelter wants to begin treatment, they do not want them to start it in the shelter. They urgently need quiet, stable homes to begin healing.

- Their Background — 🌧️🏚️
Their former owner cared about them, but due to lack of resources and education, they lived outdoors their entire lives, which led to their heartworm status. We’ve heard two different stories — they may be brother and sister or dad and daughter — but they are not bonded.

- Not Bonded — Separate Homes Preferred — 🐾💛
While they walk well together and coexist peacefully, they do squabble like many family members do, and the shelter strongly prefers they go to separate homes. Each one deserves their own space, attention, and comfort in their senior years.

- Their Temperament — 🐕‍🦺✨
Both seniors are:
- Good with calmer dog companions with proper introductions
- Easy to walk
- Housebroken in their kennels
- Up to date on all vaccinations
All they need is a safe, loving home to finally rest.

- Why This Is So Urgent — ⏳💔
At their age, with heartworm disease and no interest so far, their time at the facility is truly running out. The shelter does not want them to transition from foster to adopter at this stage — they need adopters now, people willing to give seniors the dignity and comfort they deserve.

- How You Can Help — 📣🏡
We will be posting a fundraiser to help cover their heartworm treatment, but the biggest need is a home.
Please — do not let these seniors down.

🐾 Brave Buddies Out & About: Two Chances to Meet Your New Best Friend

❤️ Semi‑Senior 95 — Today in Onancock

Meet 95, gentle semi‑senior girl who has only ever known the outdoor life — and her body shows the toll of those hard years. Today she’ll be out and about in Onancock soaking up love, practicing her socialization, and reminding everyone that even dogs with rough beginnings deserve soft landings.

- Heartworm positive, and she desperately needs a calm, loving place to rest and heal
- Dog‑friendly, especially with calm companions
- Sweet, soulful, and ready for her golden years
- The facility is Code Red, and she cannot wait any longer for a safe home

If you see her today, give her a moment, give her a smile, give her hope.

---

🐶 Ray — Saturday at the Onancock Farmers Market (around 9 AM)

Ray is the last standing teenage boy — all his brothers have been adopted. These pups came to the shelter as semi‑feral teenagers, terrified of the world. The team has worked tirelessly on their leash skills and socialization, and Ray has blossomed, but he still needs more outings, more patience, and more people cheering him on.

- Dog‑friendly, especially with the right match
- Neutered, vaccinated, and ready for a fresh start
- Needs continued socialization and gentle training
- Found as a semi‑feral pup, now learning how to trust
- Also urgently seeking adoption or foster due to Code Red

Come meet him at the Farmers Market — he’ll be the shy boy with the big heart trying his best.

---

🚨 Code Red Status
Both 95 and Ray need immediate placement — foster or adoptive — to stay safe and continue their progress. Your home, your time, your compassion can change everything for them.

🚨 CODE RED: THE SHELTER IS OUT OF KENNEL SPACE 🚨
The kennels officially filled yesterday, and several of the dogs are becoming increasingly kennel stressed. While every dog is still getting their required exercise and outings, the noise and full capacity are making it hard for some of them to cope.

They are urgently seeking FOSTERS and ADOPTERS to help them make space and give the most stressed dogs a chance to decompress and thrive.

---

🐾 HOPS & BARLEY — Unicorn Adopter Needed
Hops & Barley has been with them far too long, and the stress is taking a toll on him.

- About a year old, neutered, fully vetted
- Strong, athletic, and would benefit from a fenced yard
- Loves toys and can entertain himself for hours
- A gentle giant who melts for head rubs
- Needs to be the only pet (no dogs, no cats)
- Best with kids 10+

He is such a good dog — he just needs someone to finally see him.

---

🐾 HAZEL — Resilient, joyful, and ready for her future
Hazel’s past is something they don’t often talk about, but it matters: she was seized from a chain so short she couldn’t even lie down to reach food or water. Despite everything, she is pure sunshine.

- Just over a year old
- Extremely dog friendly
- Pulls on leash, but a no‑pull harness works wonders
- Loves everyone she meets
- Because she zooms like a rocket, toddlers may feel overwhelmed, but she settles beautifully

Hazel deserves a soft place to land after everything she’s survived.

---

🐾 95 & BUSTER — The semi‑senior sweethearts
These two came to the shelter after their owner’s mother passed away and he was forced to move out of state. He loved them deeply and did the best he could, but sometimes a lack of resources or education means dogs don’t get the socialization or preventatives they need.

Both need to begin heartworm treatment within the next two weeks, and they have nowhere for them to go.

- Deeply loving, gentle souls
- Need only‑dog homes due to limited early socialization
- Buster may do well with a calm dog — we’re happy to try
- They cannot go together (typical sibling rivalry), though they walk nicely side‑by‑side

They deserve a chance to start the next chapter of their lives with comfort and dignity.

---

🐾 ASSISTANT TO THE BRANCH MANAGER — Returned and heartbroken
This sweet boy was returned because his former adopter struggled with his need for exercise and structure, which led to stress‑chewing. None of this was his fault.

- Needs a dog friend to help his confidence
- Dog friendly, cat friendly, kid friendly
- Neutered and fully vetted
- Originally trapped with his brother after surviving months on the run in the freezing cold
- Since being returned, he has been deeply depressed, and while outings help, he needs a home to truly heal

He has come so far — he just needs someone to believe in him again.

---

💔 THEY ARE BURSTING AT THE SEAMS
These dogs need out before kennel stress takes over completely. If you can foster, adopt, or even share this post, you are helping save a life.

They cannot do this without our community.

🐾 Thank You, Diamond in the Ruff Rescue

We are so grateful — and so is our shelter — that Diamond in the Ruff Rescue was able to pull Husker Don’t, now Ray.

Ray was deeply bonded with his brother here, but outside of that comfort he was scared, shut down, and unsure of everything. This incredible one‑woman rescue saw how overwhelmed he was in the shelter environment and stepped in. Since then, Ray has made huge progress and is now available for adoption through her.

She does true life‑saving work. Please go support her, follow her page, and if you know someone looking for an amazing dog, send them her way.
