🐾🌟 Monday Update: Pack Walk Success & Exciting Events Ahead! 🌟🐾

Today, we're taking a break from our regularly scheduled Behind the Badge & Kennel Walls Monday post. As community questions have slowed down, this feature may transition to twice monthly instead of every Monday. Don't worry, we'll still be sharing plenty of behind-the-scenes insights and updates from the facility!

This weekend, the spotlight belongs to our incredible dogs, cats, alumni, and community members who joined the recent Pack Walk hosted by the Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility. 🐕🐈❤️

Participants enjoyed a stroll through downtown Onancock, complete with fun selfie stations sponsored by Bread & Butter and The Blarney Stone. Along the way, residents cheered on our adoptable pets, and several community members even joined the walk alongside the dogs. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the amazing animals waiting for homes while connecting with the community that supports them.

We're hopeful this event will continue twice each year, giving future adoptable dogs another chance to get out, explore, and meet potential supporters and adopters.

Today's forecast: 100% chance of wagging tails and happy paws! 🐾☀️

Starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Marina, adoptable dogs from Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control will be taking a stroll through town, and they'll even be joined by some VIP kitty guests traveling in style via backpacks and kitty carriages. 🐱👑

Friends of Animal Control Eastern Shore will be at the gazebo selling raffle tickets for an exciting upcoming fundraiser benefiting the animals. The shelter manager will also be available to answer questions and provide adoption applications.

📷 Selfie stations are encouraged throughout the route, so don't forget your camera!

Want to help local shelter animals? Start by showing up. Take photos. Share them. Tell your friends. Help these amazing dogs get the attention they deserve.

Community support is what helps the animals succeed. Every photo, every share, every conversation, and every smiling face helps spread the word.

🐾 **SPECIAL FOSTER-TO-ADOPT OR RESCUE NEEDED** 🐾

Some dogs leave a mark on your heart the moment you meet them, and this girl is one of them. Tiny wonder is simply that, a Tiny Wonder! ♥️

This sweet approximately 5-year-old Lab/Pit Bull mix is looking for a very special rescue or a very special local foster with the potential intention to adopt. While she is already spayed, any foster placement must remain local at this time.

She arrived at the shelter in heartbreaking physical condition, frail and curled in on herself, but despite everything she has endured, she loves everyone with her whole heart. Her gentle spirit shines through every day as she works hard on her journey toward recovery.

The shelter team is carefully following a slow refeeding plan, and we're excited to see who she becomes as her body heals and she finally gets the chance to thrive. There are details of her story we are not sharing publicly, but we are happy to discuss her background with serious foster-to-adopt applicants and approved rescue partners.

❤️ **Friends of Animal Control Eastern Shore will cover her medical expenses while she is in a foster-to-adopt home.**

🏡 What she needs:
• A local foster-to-adopt home willing to give her individualized attention and love
• Or a rescue partner willing to help her continue her recovery and gain valuable one-on-one socialization

🚗 If a rescue is able to help, transport can be arranged anywhere.

This girl has so much love to give. She's survived enough. Now she deserves a chance to simply be a dog and learn what it feels like to be cherished.

🐾🧡 **National Cat Day Adoption Plea: Alvin and Friends Need You!** 🧡🐾

What better way to celebrate National Cat Day than by opening your heart and home to a shelter cat in need?

Right now, the cat room at Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility is completely full. Every kennel is occupied with nursing moms, playful kittens, wonderful teenagers growing up in shelter care, and adult cats patiently waiting for someone to choose them.

The facility is desperately hoping today will be the day that **Alvin** finally gets his forever home.

Alvin came from a heartbreaking cruelty case and arrived with one of the most severe cases of **crate stance** ever seen. Crate stance is a condition that develops when an animal is confined in a space too small for long periods of time. The muscles, joints, and posture are affected because the animal cannot stand, stretch, walk, or move normally. It is a painful reminder of prolonged neglect and confinement.

Alvin and the other cats from this cruelty case were forced to live in tiny enclosures with inadequate ventilation, little comfort, and conditions that often left them sitting in their own waste. Despite everything they endured, they are safe now and waiting for a fresh start.

Sadly, Alvin and several of the adult cats and teenage kittens from this case have received **zero applications**. Day after day, they watch other pets leave while they continue to wait for a family of their own.

They need someone to see past their past and give them the future they deserve.

🎃🐾 Helpful Halloween Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe! 🐾🎃

Halloween can be a lot of fun, but it can also be stressful and even dangerous for our furry friends. Keep your pets safe this spooky season with these simple tips:

🍫 Keep candy out of reach. Chocolate, xylitol, and many other treats can be toxic to pets.

🚪 Watch the door. Frequent trick-or-treaters can create opportunities for curious pets to slip outside unnoticed.

🎭 Choose costumes carefully. If your pet wears a costume, make sure it fits properly, doesn't restrict movement or breathing, and isn't causing stress.

🔌 Be mindful of decorations. Candles, electrical cords, and small decorative items can be tempting hazards for pets.

🏠 Create a quiet space. The constant activity and unfamiliar visitors can be overwhelming. Give pets a calm, secure area where they can relax.

🐕 Make sure ID tags are current. If your pet becomes startled and escapes, updated identification can help bring them home quickly.

🍬 Remind guests not to share treats. Human Halloween goodies aren't pet-friendly and can lead to emergency vet visits.

The Friends of Animal Control Eastern Shore will be hitting the streets of Onancock alongside some of the facility's wonderful dogs as they strut their stuff through town. This is a great opportunity to meet adoptable pups, enjoy a walk with fellow animal lovers, and help showcase these deserving dogs to the community.

Q: If I see an animal in distress, what can I legally do?

A: If an animal is locked inside a vehicle and appears to be in distress, Virginia law allows private citizens to intervene under specific circumstances when certain legal requirements are met, including first contacting emergency services and following the procedures outlined in the law.

However, outside of those vehicle-related situations, private citizens generally do not have legal authority to enter private property, homes, fenced yards, or other areas without permission in order to reach an animal.

If you encounter an animal that appears to be in distress, the safest and most appropriate action is to contact Animal Control, law enforcement, or emergency responders immediately. While it may be tempting to intervene directly, animals experiencing fear, pain, injury, or extreme stress can react unpredictably and may bite, scratch, or otherwise cause serious injury, even when someone is trying to help.

Every situation is different, but the best approach is to proceed with extreme caution, prioritize your own safety, and contact the appropriate authorities as quickly as possible. Trained responders have the authority, equipment, and experience needed to assess the situation and provide assistance safely.

When in doubt: Call Animal Control or local law enforcement and report the situation immediately.
