Some people spend their summer vacation at the lake. Some head north to the cabin. Some plan road trips, camping adventures, or a little extra time to relax.

And some ... run 26.2 miles.

Congratulations to Mayer Lutheran math teacher Matthew Hrbacek, who spent part of his summer break competing in Grandma’s Marathon on June 20! Running from Two Harbors to Duluth along the shores of Lake Superior, Grandma’s Marathon is one of Minnesota’s premier distance-running events and attracts thousands of runners each year.

We’re proud of Mr. Hrbacek’s dedication, perseverance, and commitment to setting ambitious goals—qualities he brings to the classroom as well.

🏆 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS! 🏆

Congratulations to the Mayer Lutheran Claybreakers on finishing 1st place in the conference regular season standings!

The Crusaders capped off an outstanding season by earning the conference championship trophy, a testament to the hard work, dedication, and consistency displayed by the entire team throughout the season.

A special congratulations also goes to Emma Bruers, who finished 3rd among female shooters in the conference during the regular season. Emma's accomplishment highlights the talent and determination that helped lead the Claybreakers to their conference title.

Eric is in his 7th year at Mayer Lutheran where he serves as Director of Admissions and Enrollment. His duties include: working with new families through the admissions process, helping to manage the student information system, coordinating Shadow Days, hosting Preview Nights, leading outreach activities on and off campus, calling on Lutheran grade schools and others, awarding financial aid and assisting where help is needed. Ultimately his biggest joy comes when he sees the kids on our campus as Crusaders for the first day of school each year!

His hobbies include cooking, reading, walking our family dog, volunteering and enduring season after season of the Minnesota Vikings!

🎣 Zach Jacobs (MLHS Class of 2026) and Gabriel Shimanski (MLHS Class of 2028) competed this past Thursday in the Twin Cities Muskies Inc. youth qualifier on Lake Waconia. Zach and Gabe took first place with two muskies caught and have qualified to fish in the MN high school state championship tournament on Lake Vermilion in August. 🎣

🏈 Welcome back, Coach Aurich!

Mayer Lutheran is excited to announce that Hall of Fame coach Dean Aurich has been hired as the next head football coach of the Crusaders. After retiring three years ago, Coach Aurich returns to the sidelines with an incredible legacy that includes 256 career wins, a state championship, eight state tournament appearances, and a lasting impact on generations of student-athletes.

More than his success on the field, Coach Aurich is known for building relationships, mentoring young men, and preparing Christian leaders. We are grateful for his continued commitment to Mayer Lutheran and look forward to the next chapter of Crusader football!

⛳️ Our Crusader golfers continue their play today at the Minnesota Class A State Golf Tournament at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minnesota!

After day 1, Avery Arvig is tied for ninth place among girls, with Piper Stover tied for 61st, Charlotte Anderson in 72nd place, and Jade Anderson in 76th place. Jack Zajicek started the day in 68th place among the boys.

Three members of the Mayer Lutheran staff traveled to Petersburg, Kentucky this week to participate in the Herzog Foundation’s Athletics, Arts, and the Co-Curriculars Conference.

Gina Plotz, Kris Gustin, and Matt Polding joined Christian educators and leaders from across the country for several days of learning, collaboration, and professional growth. Conference sessions focused on how athletics, fine arts, and other co-curriculars can spark faith formation in students and be a powerful tool for reaching the hearts of our students, parents, and even community.

In addition to engaging presentations and valuable networking opportunities, the group had the chance to explore some local attractions during their time in Kentucky, including a visit to the Ark Encounter. From standing beneath the massive doors of the Ark to taking a ride on the carousel and even checking out some vintage automobiles at Ford's Garage, the trip provided plenty of memorable moments along the way.

We thank Gina, Kris, and Matt for their commitment to lifelong learning and for bringing back new ideas that will continue to benefit Mayer Lutheran students, programs, and community.
