Today is Lady Liberty's 140th birthday, so what better Wisdom Wednesday quote than the poem The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus?

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Forever remembered. Never forgotten. Today we pay tribute to the 220 Marines, 18 U.S. Navy sailors and three U.S. Army soldiers who lost their lives in the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon, on Oct. 23, 1983. https://www.marines.mil/News/Marines-TV/videoid/634642/

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Intimate partner violence is an issue that affects both civilian and military populations. An estimated one in three women, and one in four men, have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. It affects all sorts of people in the United States and abroad, in suburbs, cities and rural areas, regardless of culture, economic class, gender, sexuality, location, education level, race, religion, etc., which is why it is important to know the signs of domestic abuse and where to turn for help. And it doesn't typically start with physical violence.

Last October, we interviewed Joyce Bilyeu, CEO of the Sacramento Regional Family Justice Center in California, about this topic. Her name may be familiar to you - in addition to her work as an advocate and author, she is an active VFW Auxiliary member who has served as National Patriotic Instructor, National Americanism Ambassador, National Historian and Department of California President (2011-2012), among other positions. Bilyeu is an expert in domestic violence education, prevention and assistance. She is also a survivor.

"Domestic violence isn't a private issue," according to Bilyeu. "It's a community issue."

You can read the article in its entirety by clicking the link in the VFW Auxiliary National E-Newsletter.

It is important to remember that we, as VFW Auxiliary members, are not counselors, experts or law enforcement, but we can help by sharing information and resources at our meetings or in our communities, and also by posting fliers and phone numbers in Post home bathrooms or bulletin boards (with permission), by knowing the red flags and by believing victims when they share their stories.

"When we don't say anything, it continues and people get hurt," says Bilyeu. "I always (say), 'I believe your story.' Listen without judgment, connect them to resources."

Spreading a message of hope is key. It can get better. You are not alone.
