Life of Service: Celebrating David C. Thoen at 103
David C. Thoen has lived more than a century, yet his story still feels as though it is gaining momentum. Born on September 9, 1923, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, David grew up in a city defined by hard work, close-knit neighborhoods, and a proud maritime heritage. Those values would guide him throughout his life. He graduated from New Bedford High School in 1941 and continued his education at the New Bedford Textile School, where he became a proud member of Delta Kappa Phi.
Like so many young men of his generation, David's path changed when the world changed. In 1943, he joined the United States Army and trained at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, before deploying to the European Theater later that year. He served his country until 1946, contributing to the Allied effort that helped shape the course of history.
After returning home, David headed west to begin a new chapter in the oil industry in Louisiana. Working for an oil pipeline company, he saved diligently and laid the foundation for the future. His journey later took him to Nevada, where he worked for the Pacific Railroad repairing rail tracks, another demanding role built on precision, responsibility, and determination.
Eventually, Massachusetts called him home once again. From 1950 to 1989, David served in the Civil Engineering Department of Public Works, dedicating nearly four decades to maintaining and improving the infrastructure of the community he loved.
His commitment to service extended far beyond his professional career. David became an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Legion, the New Bedford Port Society, and the First Unitarian Church of New Bedford.
In 1988, he joined the Kiwanis Club of New Bedford, a milestone that would become one of the most meaningful chapters of his life. He enthusiastically supported countless projects, but the Salvation Army Christmas collections held a particularly special place in his heart. He also cherished the club's annual golf tournament at Paskamansett Golf Club and took great pride in the successful fundraising efforts that helped establish the helicopter pad at St. Luke's Hospital, strengthening emergency care throughout the region.
In 2021, David moved to Cape Cod and joined the Hyannis Kiwanis Club. At nearly 100 years old, he quickly became one of its most active members. Whether participating in Spectacle of Trees, helping with meal-packing events, or serving lemonade at Barnstable's Fourth of July celebration, David brought an energy and enthusiasm that inspired everyone around him.
In 2024, he received the Extraordinary Service Award, a recognition that seemed almost understated when measured against a lifetime devoted to helping others.
Of course, every hero has a trusted companion. For David, that has been fellow Kiwanian David Lorenz, who has generously served as his driver, ensuring that David never missed a meeting, community project, or opportunity to give back.
Today, in 2026, David Thoen is approaching his 103rd birthday and continues to live a life defined by purpose, generosity, and community. His story is not simply one of longevity; it is a story of unwavering dedication to service. He reminds us that service is not merely a chapter in life. It is a way of living.
As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we honor not only a man who has witnessed more than a century of history, but also someone who has spent that century making history in the lives of others.
