Thanks to Marathon Petroleum Corporation's grant support, nearly 4,000 Martinez Unified School District students will have the opportunity to experience our hands-on science, gardening and ecological literacy programing. Recently, Martinez Junior High School students explored plant adaptations and uses, planted Fall crops, and got to taste fresh feijoas, pomegranate seeds, and tomatoes, all grown in their school garden!

Over the past month, NLC staff have been teaching local youth about the importance of proper waste sorting and keeping our watersheds clean! Third graders at MUSD used a watershed model to see how water moves through a landscape and experimented with the harmful effects of pollution. Thank you to for letting us use their watershed model!

Another big thank you to our partners at for supporting EcoLiteracy education in the Martinez Unified School District!

We are so happy to be back in the garden this Fall!

Recently we wrapped up our first lessons of our Community Garden Workshops at both Carquinez Middle School (CMS) and Christ the King Catholic School (CTK). CTK students were introduced to the garden by creating nature journals and planting seeds, and CMS students had a blast planting veggie seedlings, spreading wildflower seeds, and were lucky enough to find some Monarch caterpillars!

NLC just wrapped our 10th year of EcoKids Workshops! 🌿

This year we expanded the program with a new EcoKids Leadership Workshop for 7th-9th graders, plus two extra weeks of EcoKids Workshops for 2nd-6th graders, giving kids an extra day outdoors at Susana Street Park and visits to the MUSD Community Garden.

Highlights included an upcycle challenge at the Kiwanis Club, lessons on caring for our watershed ecosystem and conserving water, and wrapping up the week at our local John Muir National Historic Site — always a favorite way to end things! Big thanks to the City of Martinez, CA - City Hall() & Kiwanis Club of Martinez () for supporting a decade of inspiring future eco-stewards!

Last Friday our NLC team wrapped up Summer Science at Rodeo Hills Elementary!

Students from TK to 5th grade joined us in the garden space to explore local ecosystems, native plants, and garden maintenance — building their own miniature gardens, bird feeders, and bug hotels while caring for the space we all share.🌻

RHE summer students also dove into science & engineering challenges, building roller coasters, stomp rockets, and flying machines! 🚀
