We still can’t get enough of Brucey! 🐾 This happy pup was named in memory of Bruce Mitchell, an Army Veteran and good friend of Chickie's & Pete's CEO Pete Ciarocchi.
A Vietnam Veteran who didn’t like to talk much, Bruce Mitchell returned home after finishing his tour and receiving an honorable discharge. He enjoyed spending time by the Delaware River, where he first met Pete 35 years ago. The two began taking Pete’s speedboat out onto the water, and a decades-long friendship was born. Despite not talking much, Bruce talked to Pete. He told him about everything from Vietnam to childhood trips to Walt Disney World to his stamp collection and love of soap operas.
Over the years, Pete encouraged Bruce to seek help through the Department of Veterans Affairs, but Bruce never wanted to go. Like many Veterans of his era, he carried his burdens privately. He died in 2024 after several years of declining health.
Through Chickie's & Pete's, Pete has supported many community causes over the years. Honoring Bruce is deeply personal. Because Bruce never received the help he needed — or had earned — Pete wanted to make sure another Veteran did. That’s why, in Bruce’s memory, Pete has chosen to sponsor a service dog through Leashes of Valor and The Patriot Fund, Inc..🎉
Thank you again to Leashes of Valor, Chickie's & Pete's, and Jefferson College of Nursing for working with us to make this possible! We are honored to share Bruce’s story with the world, and see his legacy live on in Brucey.💙
