“To those Veterans in the room: we have YOUR six.”

These words from Board Chair & Co-Founder Todd Sherman rang true during our 2nd Annual Patriot Invitational at Pelican Golf Club, and they continue to each and every day. Thanks to the dedication of our team, the passionate work of our Operational Partners, and what feels like endless generosity from our donors, The Patriot Fund is able to have the six of our nation’s Veterans, their families, and their loved ones.

We once again would like to give a very special thanks to our Keynote Presenter, Major Jonathan Turnbull, U.S. Army (Ret), and a big congratulations to our 2026 Greater Tampa Bay Area Patriot of the Year, The Permuy Family and Power Design.

To every person who supports our mission, thank you. It is because of you that we can positively impact the lives of Veterans after they return home from serving our country.

The Patriot Fund’s Executive Director, Matt Ellison, recently presented our Operational Partner, The Bar X Project, with a check for $50,000 supporting their work!

The Bar X Project's mission is to reunite Post 9/11 combat Veterans with their former units in order to reestablish the special bond forged in combat and equip them for personal and professional success. It is their belief at The Bar X Project that re-establishing the special bond forged in combat overseas is an untapped avenue to combatting PTSD and helping veterans return to normal life. Reestablishing this bond serves to remind veterans of their worth to their brothers-in-arms and help them realize their unlimited value and potential as they transition into civilian life.

We still can’t get enough of Brucey! 🐾 This happy pup was named in memory of Bruce Mitchell, an Army Veteran and good friend of Chickie's & Pete's CEO Pete Ciarocchi.

A Vietnam Veteran who didn’t like to talk much, Bruce Mitchell returned home after finishing his tour and receiving an honorable discharge. He enjoyed spending time by the Delaware River, where he first met Pete 35 years ago. The two began taking Pete’s speedboat out onto the water, and a decades-long friendship was born. Despite not talking much, Bruce talked to Pete. He told him about everything from Vietnam to childhood trips to Walt Disney World to his stamp collection and love of soap operas.

Over the years, Pete encouraged Bruce to seek help through the Department of Veterans Affairs, but Bruce never wanted to go. Like many Veterans of his era, he carried his burdens privately. He died in 2024 after several years of declining health.

Through Chickie's & Pete's, Pete has supported many community causes over the years. Honoring Bruce is deeply personal. Because Bruce never received the help he needed — or had earned — Pete wanted to make sure another Veteran did. That’s why, in Bruce’s memory, Pete has chosen to sponsor a service dog through Leashes of Valor and The Patriot Fund, Inc..🎉

Thank you again to Leashes of Valor, Chickie's & Pete's, and Jefferson College of Nursing for working with us to make this possible! We are honored to share Bruce’s story with the world, and see his legacy live on in Brucey.💙

In honor of last month’s event at Chickie’s & Pete’s, today we want to spotlight our incredible Operational Partner, Leashes of Valor, who trains and provides service dogs just like Brucey for those in need.

Leashes of Valor is a national nonprofit that provides highly-trained service dogs to post-9/11 Veterans to help with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) or military sexual trauma (MST), an underlying trauma to PTSD. Whenever possible, they source dogs from animal shelters and rescue organizations. LOV’s goal is to enrich and improve the lives of both Veterans and dogs: One leash saves two lives.
