Today marks the true emancipation of Black Americans Juneteenth! We find ourselves in the middle of one of the most consequential fights for Black political power that Florida has seen in decades. This is not a coincidence. The forces working against our representation know that a politically empowered Black community is the greatest threat to their agenda. That is why they gerrymandered our maps. That is why they stalled the budget. That is why they are trying to silence our districts.

Juneteenth teaches us something essential about how change happens: the proclamation alone was not enough. Rights declared on paper mean nothing without enforcement, without presence, and without power. One hundred and sixty-one years later, that lesson echoes loudly across the state of Florida.

This month we celebrate Juneteenth with a renewed commitment. The same forces that once denied the news of freedom now work to dilute the power of Black votes through gerrymandered maps, mid-decade redistricting power grabs, and legislative manipulation designed to keep our communities from electing leaders who truly represent us. This Juneteenth, Equal Ground is fighting back in the courts, in the community, and at the ballot box. We honor our ancestors not by standing still, but by marching forward.

Equal Ground Education Fund is launching a new video campaign in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. As our nation reflects on 250 years of history, we believe it is important to tell the full story of America including the triumphs, struggles, contributions, and resilience of Black communities that have helped shape this nation.

This campaign invites community leaders, faith leaders, advocates, students, and everyday Floridians to reflect on where we have been, where we are today, and what kind of America we want to build over the next 250 years.

Our goal is to educate, inspire, and encourage civic participation by highlighting both the lessons of our past and the possibilities of our future.

May we never forget.

Eleven years ago today, a white supremacist shot and killed nine Black worshipers and injured one other during Bible study at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Among those killed were beloved parishioners, former pastors, parents and grandparents. They each should still be here, but had their lives stolen in a racist, preventable act of gun violence.

The gunman was able to buy a gun despite his criminal background because of a gap in our laws now known as the “Charleston Loophole.” This loophole allows gun dealers to move forward with a sale if the background check takes longer than three business days. It allows those who would fail a background check to get their hands on fi****ms, and enables tragedies in our communities.

We can’t let this keep happening. Today and always, our hearts are with the victims, survivors, and Charleston community as we work to close this dangerous loophole and build a future where our houses of worship are free from gun violence.
