Earlier this month with the League of Legacy, we had a real conversation about Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, school, expectations, and what this new school year is going to look like.
We talked about the pressure that comes with being a young man and trying to figure out who you are. But most importantly, we talked about speaking up when something isn’t right. You don’t have to wait until you’re at your breaking point to say, “I need help.”
We talked about checking on each other, paying attention when somebody’s behavior changes, and understanding that asking for help doesn’t make you weak. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is admit that you’re struggling and let somebody help you through it.
And yes, we still made sure they understood that school comes first. New school year means new expectations. We’re not expecting perfection from these young men. We’re expecting growth.
Our meetings are simply about creating a space where they know they can talk, ask questions, challenge us, be honest, and know that somebody actually gives a damn about what happens to them.
