First 5 Madera County aims to provide meaningful experiences to young children during the first five years of life when brain development happens most rapidly.

Research shows that the most dramatic brain development occurs during the first five years of life. First 5 Madera County was formed through the passage of Proposition 10, a 1998 ballot initiative which placed a 50-cent-per-pack tax on cigarettes to fund education, health, child care and other programs for expectant parents and children ages 0 to 5. Since then, we've invested over $20 million locally to meet our community's needs.

Today, we’re celebrating the people who . 🎉

To everyone who has donated, volunteered, spread the word, partnered with us or simply believes every child should have books of their own: Thank You. 💓

Because of you, 2,948 children (and counting) in Madera County receive a free book every month through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Your generosity helps bring the joy of reading into homes, spark imaginations and create special moments between children and the people who love them.📚 🥰

Dolly often called her Local Imagination Library Partners the “true heroes” of her program. We’re so grateful to have a community that continues that spirit of giving. 🙏

Thank you for helping us carry on Dolly's legacy by giving back to the children of Madera County. 🤩
